Question about Air Tools & Compressors

1 Answer

I have a Speedaire Model 3Z492, 2 stage air compressor. When it runs the safety valve (60psi) vents air. When it stops everything is ok. I replaced the safety valve and the same thing happens. Is the check valve bad?

No. it's meant to vent air once the compressor reaches a certain pressure. on some compressors it's adjustable. others are not adjustable. it is actually possible to buy a higher pressure check valve if you need the extra pressure as long as the compressors internals can handle it.

If you are talking about the pressure relief valve...when you start the compressor does air continue to blow out of it?? If so, it is rendered defective and should be replaced. There is probably a flake of debris stuck in the seat or due to humidity in the compressed air its internal workings have rusted and are causing it to stick. Not worth the chance to attempt repairing, just replace it.

Remove the valve and wrap some Teflon tape around the threads of the valve fitting (about two wraps). Reinstall the valve and the leaking should stop. Make sure the valve is snugged down good.

Parts lists (i.e. rods, crankshaft, rings) for

Information about your unit can be faxed to you by calling the number below:
From the USA, please contact us at 1-800-323-0620

It may be easier however to look for the model number of the pump only as the 3z497 reference number is of the the complete unit. Look for model number or information on the pump itself and check that number at I believe that you have a two stage pump that may still be sold seperately. Good luck on your repair.

The motor runs continuously and the pressure is low. What are the possible causes for this?

You haven't given any model number information, but typically on any air compressor if it won't build pressure, either you have a leak in your piping, tank, hose or the compressor cannot move the required cfm of air. Could be a valve problem or piston, relief valve? Do you hear any air leaking. There are som many different models from cheap throw away compressors to thousands of dollar models. HArd to say without more information

I'll email you the breakdown. The pump is probably actually a 3Z180, made for Speedaire by Champion. If you are looking for the assembly sticking out of the back of the pump, it is probably the centrifugal unloader, which vents the pressure after the compressor shuts down. You can get the parts from Grainger parts (888-361-8649), or your local Champion compressor distributor.

Im putting a 2 stage pump on my compressor

I would be glad to help with your project, sounds like you are a tinker-er. Most all compressors whether one or two stage are plumbed the same. The important difference is that two stage compressors are made for a higher pressure range. This means that the tank must be able to safely hold more pressure than single stage. Other considerations are that the pressure switch, safety valve, check valve, regulator and all the tubing would need to be upgraded. Finally two stage compressor takes longer to cycle because of lower volume. If you want to continue, post again listing the parts that you already have.
