  • Try to run CHKDSK C: /f /r More details here: http://www.updatexp.com/windows-xp-chkdsk.html
  • If you have the OEM CD try to boot from CD and reinstall the OS. Be careful that reinstalling will delete all the personal data (like photos, docs, ...) on your hard drive , if any.

You can use system restore and restore your computer's settings to a previous date. Please choose a date during which you know that your computer worked fine. This will remove any recently made change that had affected windows Vista in your computer

Why does my laptop lose Homegroup connection every few minutes then reconnects? the other computer in the Homegroup however does not lose connection. I am using windows 7 home premium.

Method 1:
Step 1: Start your computer in safe mode with networking and check the functionality.
Starts Windows in safe mode and includes the network drivers and services needed to access the Internet or other computers on your network.
Advanced startup options (including safe mode)

If it works fine in safe mode with networking, perform clean boot to find the root cause.
Step 2: If it works fine in safe mode with networking, perform clean boot to find the root cause.
To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

NOTE: After you check the functionality in clean boot configure Windows to use Normal startup using the step 7 suggested in the link mentioned above.

1)start your antivirus while log in safe mode and run a full scan
if virus is found remove it and start windows normally run a full scan afterwards
2) if no antivirus is install, i would recomend you to reinstall the OS

who ever fixed your laptop must has done some thing that has led you to this issue....it's just not possible that you wont have Safe Mode, it's one of the inbuilt safety system of Windows OS....press F8 to get into the option to go to Safe Mode or.....Normal mode of operation.....
You need to press F8 before the Windows screen appears...after you switch ON your laptop.

Windows vista will not boot on a toshiba laptop

First try boot options.

On start up press F8, you get different boot options listed.

Select "last known good configuration"
If this doesn't work, try "boot into Safe Mode". Then restart once safe mode loads.

If neither of these work, you may have to attempt a "repair" of windows.

Get a Windows Vista Operating system disk (same version of Vista, Home or Premium).

1. Boot from it (put it in CD drive and restart the laptop).

2. If you still get the same problem start up, you need to set the laptop to boot from CD.

3. Restart laptop, press Delete key or F2, or F12 (it should say one of these on the screen) to enter the Setup. or another key to get "boot options"

4. In Setup (BIOS) Use Right Arrow to find the Boot Options. Use the instructions to move the CD-ROM to first position, above HDD (hard drive). Press Esc, then F10 to save your changes and exit.

5. The Windows Setup CD Rom should now run. It should come to a screen where you are asked to press R to repair windows.

6. When it comes to the command prompt, restart the laptop

Hopefully the laptop should boot OK again.

BOOting problem with vista laptop

Next time you are staring it, tap F8 key and boot into safe mode or safe mode with networking. then check the Problems and Solutions in Control Panel for the issue. If nothing is found there, back up sensitive data and reinstall or perform System Recovery.
