The connectors on the the camera end are very small and are easily damaged, they only go in one way and if your force them you may bend the housing around the connector. look close at the small end (that goes into the camera) and see if it looks bent. if it is you may be able to straighten it with very small needle nose pliers, if its not bent, make sure that you are pushing it in correctly. also make sure you didn't accidently get the wrong cable. i know I have several devices that have cables and all the ends look similar but are not exactly the same size. Last resort, buy a new cable from your local store

Looking for a download usb cable for the vivitar 8400 cant locate one

Consider NOT using the USB connection.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.

Using vivicam 8400 as webcam

You can't. The 8400 was designed as a camera, storing images (and videos) to a memory card. It was not designed to stream videos live to another device.

I don't want to put specific websites on here (not sure that would be fair advertising), but if you Google this phrase "vivitar vivicam 8400 usb data cable", then you'll find several places that sell them. They're about $20 USD
