Question about Chauvet Dmx-4 4 Channel Dmx Dimmer Relay Pack $0ship

1 Answer

DMX function appears to have failed, stand alone chase working fine. Controller panel functions well with other units. Item: DMX-4 dimmer pack.

Thanks, but with or without the terminator no DMX, changing the address doesn't seem to help either. Are there schematics of the circuitry anywhere? Is it possible that the DMX chip is fried leaving the Chase circuitry intact? i.e are they two separate entities?

Make sure you have the correct address dialed in for the unit and the mode.

If this is on a long cable, read about "terminating resistor" that is sometimes needed to avoid reflection on the DMX daisy chain that can cause random effects.

Try using a different address with the unit as well.

Testimonial: "Thanks Fredy2... I was wondering about why I would have the chase and not the DMX. I fear my DMX circuitry is blown on this unit. Much appreciated."

The processor will be all in one chip... however the interface circuitry for the DMX input might be in question. Getting schematics is rare for any of this equipment. The DMX input circuit will be very simple and can be tested and traced without a schematic. The DMX input will go through an optocoupler into the processor. You will need to send data to the unit and put an oscilloscope on the Optocoupler output to verify operation of the interface, Beyond that the signal goes to the processor which is most likely working IF you can change the address.

The only other thing I can think of is if you have certain type loads that interfere with the DMX data due to electrical noise. Chase is just an internal function so it would NOT be affected.

Also check wiring from the DMX inout connector to the circuit board OR if the connector attaches directly to the board, then check the soldering as it is a common place to have the solder break loose.

Will not turn on

You do not say what dimmer pack you used, I hope it wasn't and you mean a DMX controller. If you plugged in a dimmer pack you have almost certainly destroyed the unit. If you used a DMX controller you have probably still got it set for DMX operation so you will need to change the mode. If the unit is completely dead ie. nothing on the display not just no light - there is little you can do yourself to repair it These can however be picked up for under 75 on ebay etc. so it is not likely to be worth repairing anyway.

With dimmer pack off, light comes on

May be misinterpreting....but..... If channel 3 is providing power even when it shouldn't, there is likely a shorted triac for that channel. A triac is basically an electronic switch for AC power. Normally it needs to be triggered to switch on.... But a shorted triac would be on all the time. Common when too heavy load is plugged into it. That triac would have to be replaced.

Elation DP-DMX20L will not power up. Not sure if it is the internal fuse or if it is something else. Please help.

There usually are no internal fuses in these. Open the unit watching out for buttons that may fall out of the cover. OFTEN the problem will be visible like a loose wire/broken solder. If the logic circuits are working and the display is lit, often the problem is blown Triacs that control the output receptacles. These are usually 600 volt, 16 amp Triacs.

I have an Elation FC400 DMX foot controller and an Eliminator ED15 Dimmer pack (8 plug ins). Cannot get controller to do anything when Dimmer Pack set to Slave mode, Dimmer pack works fine on Programs...

In slave mode the second pack should be controlled by the first pack in the chain, not the foot controller. I think you probably don't want to be using slave mode if you are using external controller... try setting the packs to the same address so they both track the foot controller.

Operator does not put out a DMX waveform. The display indicates previously programmed scenes and chases are running. All the buttons and slides appear to respond. The unit is 6 months old. Are there...

I assume you have checked the serial digital waveform from the unit with an OSCILLOSCOPE which is the only way you can look at the DMX waveform. You will have a hard time syncronizing to the waveform. What voltage levels does the wave swing between? If you don't have an oscilloscope, then you have not REALLY looked at the waveform. In that case, USE a known good fixture CLOSE to this controller using a DIFFERENT cable to see if a single fixture works close to the unit. If it does, SUSPECT that your cabling has a break or short someplace. Also check if your daisy chain DMX cable MIGHT require a terminator resistor at the end... Read up on DMX termination.

When unit is turned on, all lights turn on, even with DMX cable unplugged. All 'Monitor' LED's, 'Power Indicator' and 'DMX Indicator' are on, regardless of 'Switch pack' settings.

The Triacs in the unit probably have shorted. They use a 16 amp Triac in most of these. If none of the stand alone funtions work, this is the likely cause.

The followspot was on and the bulb blew with a loud bang, when I changed the bulb it powered up and came on but could no longer blackout or dim the light with the dimmer manually or DMX. I have it apart...

When he bulb blew out, it temporarily shorted and blew out the Triac that controls the voltage to the lamp. It will need to be replaced... A lot of the Chauvet units use a 16 amp, 600 volt Triac part number :

which is available from Digikey. It will be mounted on a heatsink.
