Question about LaCie Rikiki Go 1TB USB 2.0 Portable - Silver - 301946 Hard Drive

1 Answer

I joined another internet cafe in cambodia and hooked up my USB drive Lacie Rikiki 500Gb and the McAfee OAS on the host computer reported it found a virus in it and deleted it. It was probably a boot file or something as the previously fine working drive is now only visible on "My Computer" but instead of opening asks which program I want to use to "Open" it.. How can I get to open the drive again on WinXP without losing the about 2000 photographs inside it?

The computer at the Internet Cafe' probably was virus-infected, and the computer-virus wrote a computer-virus onto your USB memory-stick.

Just click "cancel" to that "which program" prompt.

Then, open "My Computer", and right-mouse-click on the icon for the USB device, and click "Explore", to view the files/folders.

LaCie Rikiki stops working. The led does not blink.

This kind of fault is usually the case to drive interface. You can remove the drive and try to plug it into you computer using the IDE or SATA cables your drive needs. You will then be able to tell if it is your drive or the case.

Can you open the case and remove the HDD? I looked at the specs on the device and I didn't see what interface the drive is, I would assume it's a SATA, I don't know for sure. Can you ID it? You can get a USB 2.0 to IDE/SATA Adapter: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3276554 You can remove the HDD, here are some examples : http://www.ultraproducts.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=2781&name=2.5
>>>>I found the specs on the HDD inside, it is a SATA, (samsung hm500ji) : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152168 , You can use the adapter to remove data and erase HDD and return for replacement under warranty.

Your hard drive is most likely dead, you need to call the manufacturer and have them send you a replacement, the warranty should cover this.
