Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

1 Answer

My 6 year old Maytag Neptune TL washer just started getting stuck at minute number 33, not continuing its cycle. I've unplugged the machine and restarted another wash only to have the same problem. Is this an expensive computer problem?

    Thanks for the post. I was told by an online technician on Fixya last night that it was a motor control assembly failure (he is in india and his advice cost me $24). I am not DIY skilled so I will have to have these repairs done out of warranty. My question to you is that if I spend a few hundred dollars to have tub seal repaired and the outer tub rebuilt, will this machine continue to be problematic? It seems I would be better off going on craiglist and getting an old school top loader for $100 and putting this computerized lemon on the street. What do you think?

Frank,

Tried to work with an owner of a Series 16 machine recently.

I discovered this with very painful guidance in troubleshooting that the Clutch Pulley was was seized up I feel do to a Leaky Tub Seal.

If and only if you have basic DIY skills you can work toward saving your $1k machine. I can help the DIY owner if you have the concept of pounding out bearings and pounding them in, read this post [FIXED] Maytag Neptune, Timer Problem

This is the forum to DIY the repair in. You can get the Service Manual from this forum and I'm writing supports notes that are a general guide line to do an Outer Tub Rebuild for around $170 if you control the parts buy cost correctly.

See this post for what is involved for a Outer Tub rebuild.

    Thanks for your post. I chatted online with a technician on Fixya last night who told me with certainty that my washer needed a new motor control assembly (and charged me $24). I am not DIY friendly so i would need to hire a repair person to work on my machine. I am thinking I would be charged approx $350 to get this washer going again and would probably have similar trouble in the next couple of years with this unit. Would I be better off buying something new and simple for $500 or paying $100 for a used old school toploader off of craigslist. Then I would haul this computerized Maytag lemon to the curb. Your thoughts?

    I too have a 6 yr old Magtag Neptune TL top loaded that is not emptying the water. I had a technician out and he told me to buy a new one washer. His experience with them has been that it will cost almost $500 to repair and I'll continue to have troubles. Ugh!!

Any error codes. What happens if you start a Spin Only Cycle witht the same load? Does the times stay stuck at xx minutes in the LED display and the machine constantely starts and stops?

Hi from retired Englishman in SW France,

Sorry but I do not know your particular machine BUT I would suggest as a first step that you clean the drain motor lint tray/filter. So many 'faults' are caused by blocked filters. The motor is unable to drain all of the water in the allotted time.
If you are unsure where the filter is, it is often behind the front lower (kick) panel (or in some machines at the rear in an awkward position!) and held in by a round cover/knob.

REMOVE POWER AND ENSURE YOU HAVE A WATER RECEPTACLE/RAGS TO SOAK UP THE WATER WHICH IS BOUND TO POUR OUT!

It's surprising what people have found in theirs! It is always worthwhile checking it on a regular basis.
Now- whilst the filter is removed it is normally possible to see the drain motor and ensure it is not jammed by a foreign object such as a needle or a toothpick. It should be able to be turned by hand/finger- the power IS OFF!
At this point it is also possible to test if the motor works. No clothes or water in the machine, select a spin cycle and put the power back on. You should be able to see the motor turning at some point, possibly straight away. If it doesn't work then the motor is malfunctioning!

Hope the filter is the problem and good luck!

Has 33 minutes and a error message of nd--maytag Neptune tl

What is the Model number of your machine if its a FAV6800A or FAV9800A please read on.

The ND error code means No Drain.

You could have a drain line clog or a stuck Pressure Switch contacts.

See this post for past troubleshooting;

http://www.fixya.com/support/t2209123-code_nd_fav6800aww_serial_number_10

There are links to the Service Manual and I go over how to put the machine in Service Mode to check that the Pressure Switch is signaling properly.

Do you want to DIY the repair?

Maytag neptune tl makes grinding sound and stops at 33 minutes in normal mode and at 24 minutes in quick wash mode

Hello djlampl,

With the lowest spin cycle setting I enter spin cycle in Quick Wash around the 21 minute mark. But first question is do you hear the grinding noise with the tumblers rotating during the wash/agitate cycle?

If you start a spin only cycle do you hear the grinding noise?

Does the washer error code out with an error code to the display? Codes such as dC, uC, Lr?, I assume the machine type is a FAV6800AW is that correct?

Any additional info will help in troubleshooting…..Rich

Assuming the machine type is a FAV6800A/FAV9800A here are some handy links;
