Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP3 Full Version OEM for PC

2 Answers

Slave Harddrive I have an extra harddrive that I wish to install as a slave, unfortunately I cannot at the moment, due to some problems. First, the current harddrive I have is a Maxtor I believe, and it is a master drive, the jumper is on the right spot, but it says it isn't set up to have a slave, and it doesn't have a jumper instruction picture like usual, nor can I find one on Seagate.com. Also the extra harddrive may have a small virus on it, and I cannot get it onto the internet to get an antivirus, so I may have to usb transfer one. Any help would be great!

Virus can't manipulate your hardrive as slave, as long i know. but you can try cable data must be change and about jumper i think all hardisk must be same for position Master and Slave, and if you don't know what as master or slave, system just check 1 HDD as Bootloader system and the other must be as slave. but you after installed HDD, you must check on BIOS System if HDD have detected on system.

Wont see slave Hard Drive in a Dell Dimension 2400

Did you set the Master harddrive as master?

Or is your reference that you set the jumper cap, on the jumper pins; of both harddrives to Cable Select?

What are the manufacturer names, and model numbers of the two harddrives?

If you just see something like - WD2500JB, that will work.

How many wire is the Flat IDE ribbon cable?

There are 40 wire versions, and 80 wire versions.

Notice I stated - Wire.
They will both have 39 socket holes that are used.
(40 socket holes, with 1 blocked off)

80 wire IDE ribbon cable has Master harddrive in middle.
Slave harddrive at end of cable.
Little weird, huh?

40 wire IDE ribbon cable, has Master harddrive at end of cable, Slave in middle.

As for, "Computer will not see it."

Not trying to insult your intelligence. Am trying to see if we are both on the same page.............

1) You go to My Computer, and there is no drive letter assigned to that harddrive you just installed?

If it is there, you double-click on it to open that harddrive.

How to add 2nd hdd to hp 513n

As I recall busy_bee96 the harddrive technology used is IDE. (Also known as PATA)

Let's see if there is information on HP Support;

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=bph07813&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=90384

Yes, if we scroll down to the heading - IDE UDMA Modes, we see ATA 66/100 listed.
IDE (PATA) harddrives are used.

The HP pavilion 513n Desktop PC came with an IDE 60GB harddrive.
I don't know what size Slave drive you are going to install, but there may be a size limitation.

On the back of an IDE harddrive are jumper pins. For the original harddrive these may need to be set to Master.
To perform this function the jumper is placed on the two pins for the Master setting.

These are examples of a Jumper,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Jumperblock-shunts.jpg

Small plastic blocks that are hollow inside. There is a rolled spring clip inside the hollow block, that goes over two pins. Connects the two pins together.

General example of the back of an IDE harddrive, showing the Jumper Pins,
I'm going to use Western Digital's IDE harddrive jumper pin settings,

http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/463/session/L3RpbWUvMTMxODI2NDI0OC9zaWQvSjEzTHVkR2s%3D

Where it states Dual Master is the setting for the Master harddrive.
Where it states Dual Slave is the setting for the Slave harddrive.

Look at the label on your harddrive, and see if it shows the settings for Master.
If not write down the Model Number, and search it online.
OR, post the Model Number in a Comment, and I'll look it up for you.

It may be where there is NO jumper used on the Master harddrive.

Look up the information for the 2nd (Slave drive) harddrive, if it is not stated on the label.

You need to know where the jumper pin settings should be, when using two harddrives.

Past this point you need to look at the flat ribbon cable.
There are IDE ribbon cables that have 40 wires, and 80 wires.
Both styles have 40 contact pins.
(39 actually. 1 is not used)

With the 40 wire IDE cable the Master harddrive is plugged into the MIDDLE connector, on the cable.
The Slave drive is plugged into the END connector.

With the 80 wires IDE cable, it is reversed.
Master harddrive goes to the END connector, Slave drive goes to the MIDDLE connector.

Try these things,

Keep the main, original hard drive pin selected to "master", make sure the original hard drive is connected to the motherboard at the default connection.

IDE's it should be the last connector on the cord and not shared with the cd/dvd rom cord.

Sata's it should be the number "one" connector on the motherboard. The board is typically labeled and with numbers.

The new hard drives you should try putting them into "cable select" since you said setting them to "slave" doesnt work. It's a good idea to just go into bios to make sure those connectors are enabled. Some desktop bios are set to off or disabled.

Do you have a CD/DVD player? Sometimes I have seen they can interfere with adding hard drives. Why not remove it for the time being just to see if it works.

How do i install a used hard drive into an eMachines T2341? The hard drive still has information on it. do i set it as master, slave, or cable select? hard drive is an IBM 10.1 gb

There are two possible solutions depending on how your desktop is setup.
#1 install the 2nd hard drive and put jumper to CABLE SELECT. When you start the computer it should now appear in the bios as a SLAVE or 2nd hard drive. If not go to #2 below
#2 Turn system off again and change jumper on 2nd hard drive to SLAVE.
Now when your computer restarts it will appear in your bios correctly as the 2nd drive/SLAVE.
Do not make it "MASTER" or you will be trying to boot up to this drive and it may not work as you planned.

FYI: "Cable Select" means the hard drive determines which one is Master and which one is Slave by where it is on the data cable.

Good Luck

Diamond max 20 hard drive won't install - jumper problems - want as slave, my old one as master

on the back of the drive there should be a black, white or yellow jumper. If you look very carfully at the back of the harddrive where the jumper is, it will tell you which position you need to have the jumper in for slave and which position you need to have it in for master. If it is already in the master position, carefully pull it out then push it back into the correct position to act as slave. Some hardrives simpley have a M for master and a S for slave while other harddrive will actually have the words. I hope this helps.

I have a customer were a similar problem, the machine is so old it will not support any new hardware and obviously the Windows version it is running will not support new software.
Because his machine is starting to fail the first thing I did was connect his harddrive to a more modern machine (XP) as a Slave and make what is known as an Image of his harddrive using Acronis True Image. Now we have a copy of the whole harddrive which can be copied onto another harddrive should the need arise like his harddrive failing.
This is great but what about the updated data? this image is only as uptodate as the day it was made. You can install a simple backup program that is not installed during the install of Windows 95,98 or ME but is available on the Windows CD.
You can find instructions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264541/en-us
You can download a free trial of True Image here:
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/download/trueimage/
The machine I service is set to make a backup everyday and the woman who operates the machine burns a CD of the backup files once a week. Once a month I go and make another Image of the entire harddrive again.
Bear in mind if that machine is as old as you say the BIOS will probably not support a harddrive larger than 4gigabyte and any USB ports are likely to be USB1.1, so backing up to an external harddrive will be slow. You could try installing a Slave to the machine and running True Image on the machine then creating an image on the Slave harddrive.

If you have access to another computer with internet access, make sure that computer has the most upto date antivirus and malware scanners installed and slave your harddrive to it. As a slave you will be able to scan your harddrive without initialising your copy of Windows and therefore not initialising the virus on your harddrive.
