Look at this forum here http://www.tractorforum.com/f154/engine-simplicity-12hp-13-hp-greyhound-16165/ One of the members seems to own that tractor and has recently posted some info on the engine. I would bet if you joined and asked he could tell you how to set up your tiller.

WHO DO YOU TIGHTEN THE MOWER DECK BELT TENSON?

Not sure of your model but you can find the Craftsman web site and get a diagram. Most of the decks I have come in contact with will use an idler type pully somewhere in the belt route that will move in or out etc. to take up slack in belt.Sometimes a spring does the job by holding a pulley against the belt so check to make sure all the pulleys are ok and all the springs are ok.Hope this helps.Rick

Thought I posted a solution earlier on this, but it was my first post and I don't see it here so I'll try again.
Google search on your model shows the drive belt diagram on page 27 of the manual.

Looks like mine.
basically need to remove front pulley by loosening center bottom bolt while holding the center nut on top of motor.
Slip belt over the rear pulley first and then straight toward the front, slip belt on front pulley and then slide pulley back onto shaft.
Then wind through the rest of the pulleys etc..as seen in the diagram.

I need a drive belt diagram for a 1974 john deere garden tractor 112 wiyh 12 hp kohler engine

I don't have a diagram but it shouldn't be to hard. You will have to drop the deck. Then when installing the new belt remember to always place the inside of the belt (V) into the pulleys and the outside of the belt (flat side) up against the larger idler pulley. When you have the belt on properly it should be snug. If you have excessive play you need to try a different routing around the idler.

Good luck and let me know if this helps.
Thanks

Built routing problem

make sure you have the right belt and then it should be fairly easy to route the belt if you put the back of the belt (flat side) up against the larger in height idler pulleys and the smaller (v) in the smaller pulleys. The belt should be snug when on properly.

Replace primary belt

here you go. (should be a diagram pictured below). If no picture, then the belt routes from the engine pulley on both sides (goes around the pulley) and goes strait back in between the two smaller pulleys, one an idler, the other spring loaded tensioner. The belt goes left with one leg, right with the other (from front or back) and engages both pulleys. Then goes to both blade pulleys and around them, then "meets" each other at the rear of the deck, running  strait from one blade pulley to the other.image.tiff
