Most likely it uses R22. R12 is generally used for automotive cooling --W/D--

Sub zero 642 refrigerator not cooling

Being a sub zero tech and actually fixing that exact model earlier today I would recommend you call a qualified service tech to come take a look. If not, I'll tell you the steps I would take to isolate the problem. 1) check to see if the refrigerator fan, also called the evaporator fan, is running. Just open the door, hold in the switch next to the light switch and listen. You'll hear it easily if it is. 2) If fan is running remove the grate up top, the one you took off to put the condensor fan motor, and see if the right side compressor is running. Don't always go with if its vibrating its running because the freezer compressor or the condensor fan can cause it to happen. Find the high side, or condensor line which is the smaller that comes out of the compressor in the back and runs up front to the condensor, and feel if its hot. Hot = good, cold = bad. Note that all this can be avoided if you have a set of freon guages because that model has access taps already on them. They are wrapped in yellow. If you have guages unscrew the cap and connect the guages. On the outside numbers the needle should be around the 25-30 on the positive side. If its in the green area, the negative, around the 10 you need some freon, and possibly have a micro-leak that needs repairing. If its down in the -20 to -30 area you have a serious leak, more than likely in the evaporator inside the fridge, and you should relay call a tech. Now if the needle jumps way up to 70 or 80 and the compressor is hot, really bad, call tech. and if it does that and is cold, the compressor is just off. Now if your still with me and stuck through this far i'll give you the cliff notes.
If the temp is 55 that mean the fan inside is running, and that more than likely the compressor. Now here are some questions to ask yourself. Are the condensor coils clean? That would raise the temperature. You just changed the condensor fan motor, did you put the blade back on right? If the air flow is blowing across the compressor in the direction of the freezedr compressor, your blowing really hot air from the condensor across the compressor and your temperature will raise badly. Fan draws air across the compressor and through the condensor. Worse case scenario you jacked the control board up inside, which I dont think is the case either. ** check that fan blade **

My Whirlpool ET8WTKXKT0 doesn't cooling down. The fan is working, but the compressor like dead. What I have to check? Thanks. Victor

Its the problem with compressor,The problem is weak compressor. The refrigerant ( R12) in the compressor is got low.The compressor is weak. The compressor needs to be replaced.-------------- The working procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located.------------ But as you mentioned that freezer not cooling this indicates problem with compressor. When compressor cools the freezer section then fridge section gets cold.If freezer section is not getting properly cold then fridge section will not cool properly/.So the problem relates to compressor.---------- In the compressor there is a refrigerant called FREON.With the help of this Freon the compressor cools the freezer section.Freon is a gaseous type cooling agent. The compressor will stop cooling when coolant gets leaked from its chamber.--------- Again recharging the Freon is possible, but the cost for that recharging is approx the cost of new compressor. So its always advisable to get compressor replaced.Because new compressor has warranty for few years.------------------ You can get required parts from from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site. --------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

You might have a dirty condenser or possibly a freon leak. Check to see if the fans are running and lights are going off when the doors are closed. You didn't mention what the model number is, that might help.

if you overcharged unit then u will get a frost build up on one of the lines coming off the compressor. if the compressor is not running then you will not get any cold air flow at all. if unit is stuck in defrost then no cold air will be dispensed either. you really need to check to see if you have a frost build up on the rear wall of freezer, if so then u are not going through defrost. to check proper level of freon u need a set of r12 gages. your level of freon will be displayed on the model serial number tag in fridge side. let me know and we will go futher.

When not run for a while, or stored on its side..the oil AND freon can deposit into / or out of the compressor sump. This could take a day or a little more to fix itself. Otherwise your indication is of - low freon.

Refrigerator not cooling properly

You may have a low freon condition in the fridge section. Look to see if you have an ice block building up on the rear wall towards the lower left side. If so, you are low on freon and the ost likely culprit is a leaking evaporater. The best way to tell if you are low on freon for sure is to take out all the shelves, remove the light cover, then the 2 screws holding the fan cover, and then remove the back wall. You wont be able to pull it all the way out cause the cold control is attached to it for the freezer and fridge so be careful. Turn the fridge control all the way up to 10 and wait till the compressor is running. you can tell if the compressor is running by pushing in the little switch on the top of the door frame and seeing if the fan runs(one switch is for lights, the other for fan) if it runs the compressor is on. anyway watch the coils and see if they develop frost all the way from top to bottom. If they dont you are low on freon and are ooking at about a $600 repair. if it does frost all the way you may have a bad cold control or a stalling fan motor up by the condensor on top. The best way to tell this is the next time the fridge feels warm, sheck the frame around the door seal and see if it is hot to the touch. If it is you almost surley have a bad condensor fan motor. Hope you can wade through all tis to find the answers. Good Luck!
