Question about LeapFrog Leapster Explorer Learning Experience

3 Answers

The volume button doesn't work on our leapster explorer. It shows that the volume is at the lowest point, but it will not increase so we can hear it. We tried replacing the batteries and that didn't work. The game works fine but just without volume.

I had same problem, just fixed it by a little hack. The volume up switch is broken.
1. Remove accessory door on bottom. 2. Remove all screws on back. 3. Open back cover.
Looking at the exposed board, there are 2 volume switches (back to back). Directly next the switches are four contacts: the upper 2 are for volume down, the lower 2 are for volume up.
4. Place the battery pack on the board and hold it down. 5. Press the power button to turn on the unit. 6. Use a small wire to jump the volume up contacts multiple times to change the volume to maximum (or desired level). 7. (Optional) Remove the volume buttons and throw away the rubber cushions to prevent the volume from changing. 8. Replace everything back in place.

Hi..I am having this same problelm with the leapster explorer's volume button..can you explain more in detail number 6 above. I am having trouble understanding that part.
    Thank you

There are two volume buttons: vol up # vol dn. They are momentary switches. The contactor for the vol up button is broken for whatever reason so the two contacts for the circuit remain open at all times. To activate "vol up", you'll have to close the circuit momentarily. To do this, you could use a short wire to jump the two contacts, or you could use a flat screwdriver to close the circuit. The idea is to close the circuit so that the explorer thinks that you'll pressing the vol up button. You'll need to repeat the jumping a few times just as you would press the vol up button. Once you get the desired volume level, you can press the power button to turn it off. The explorer seems to remember your desired volume level even if you remove the battery pack.

This is great if the volume "up" is broken, but the switches are on opposite sides of the circuit board. If the volume "down" is broken, as in my case, the pins on the "down" momentary switch are not visible unless you unscrew the circuit board from the front face as well, then flip it over.

I'm really sorry but I really am not getting step 6 - I don't understand or see where the "contacts" are - would there be a image someplace that you could direct me - this is exactly our issue but i am stuck at what to jump. I'm not a very mechanical mom :)
    Thank you!

Thank you so much Joe Maestro. Your solution worked perfectly and I am thrilled I fixed my son's explorer myself. Thank you esp for the extra details on step 6 - it took me a little while to get the connection to work, but I managed it. Thank you!!

Here's a solution that won't require opening up the leapster. Connect the toy via Leapfrog Connect. Click on "Settings" on the upper right-hand corner of the screen. Three tabs will appear: General, Advanced, and Leapster Explorer. Click on "Leapster Explorer." Three more buttons will appear: Reset, Repair, and Check for Updates. Click on the "Repair" button. Leapfrog Connect will bring up the volume to the best level (not the loudest).

chia517's solution worked for me. I think this is a much better option than having to open the machine.

Increase the volume on my Cubit bobby?

You can simply dial any number and press the Volume Up button to increase your hearing piece volume. If that doesn't work, you should go to a service point to replace your phone's earpiece.

Thank you...

My leapster wont reconize the camera

I had the same exact problem. I even tried another camera with no luck. I ended up updating the firmware/software on the Leapster Explorer and the camera started working. Here is a link to the Leapster website showing you how this is done:

I gave my son a leapster explorer about a month now and it's volume just stopped working and it wont hear anything.

Hello,
there are three basic reasons why the leapster explorer won't bring out sound.
1. Defective speaker
The speaker of your leapster explorer maybe defective, this can make it not bring out any sound. Disassemble the leapster explorer, check the speaker part, test the speaker with a AA battery. If you hear any sound using the battery, then it means there is nothing wrong with the speaker.
2. Loose wire connection
Disassemble the leapster explorer, check the wires connecting the speaker to the board. Check for any wire cut, or loose connection which can cause the speaker not to bring out sound. . 3. Sound IC/Card/Board
If non of the above is the cause of the problem, then it means the leapster explorer is having a defective sound ic/board/card. There is an IC on the board of the leapster explorer which is responsible for sound. If this ic has a shot, there won't be any sound. If this be the cause, I think it's high time to took the leapster explorer to a repairman because this requires skill.
I hope the above is clear. If not, please let me know for further assistance.
Regards.

How can i change pets on pet pals for leapster explorer

Turn on your child's Leapster Explorer handheld.
When the SIGN-IN menu shows up, press the left D-pad and Hint button at the same time.

howtogettoparentsettings.jpg
This will give you the PARENT SETTINGS menu.
You will need to start them from scratch to choose a new pet. It is sad but at current it is the only way to choose a new pet.

I have leapster l-max and am having trouble with the stylus working. when i try to calibrate, i can't click on center targets

Leapster L-Max recalibrates differently. I was trying to use the instructions and it kept asking for a blue button. For the Leapster L-Max push B, A, Hint, and Home when you turn it on. Do not have a cartridge in the player or it will think it is a regular Leapster. Once it says calibrate screen it will say to press A, then wait until a target appears in the upper left hand corner, touch it and you should hear a sound, then a new target appears in the lower left hand, repeat actions, then lower right hand screen, and finally the upper right hand screen. If it stops at any time and doesn't get more arrows, try it again or turn it off and see if the pen works. It may take several times to get it working again.
