Question about Cub Cadet Riding Lawn Garden Tractor 25hp Kohler 50"

1 Answer

I think the vavles are out of adjustment and its causing the engine to develop too much compression because the engine will hardly turn over. I have had the starter rebuilt and the battery is fully charged, how do i adjust vavles and what tolerance do I use when setting clearances?

I think you are on the wrong path. Old valves lose compression, they do not increase compression.
And if they are out of adjustment, again that will not cause an increase in compression either. Closed is closed, irrespective of how much gap there is on top of the valve stem. And not being open far enough on intake is certainly not going to cause the compression to increase.

I think you need to check timing, as opposed to valve gap. You should be able to find the kohler website and find info there to give you info as to where the valve train should be in relationship to the position of the pistons.

Well one cylinder with low compression would be a valve or timing chain problem - and a timing chain problem could cause it not to start.
Spark timing won't have any affect on compression.

This sounds like the problem is posted in the wrong forum. If this is an engine that requires manually turning before an electric start can start it, likely the available torque of the starter is insufficient and rotating the engine beyond the compression pint gives the starter enough rotation room so it can develop enough inertial force to get it over the compression point. The cause of this is USUALLY a bad battery, cables or connections reducing the starting voltage.

I have a 1996 nissan sunny fuel injected ... i have changed the plugs, injector rail, distributer, throttle body, and my engine is still misfiring can some one advise me please..

inspect the wiring for loose connections or bad wiring.

try adjusting first the distributor by turning it. It should adjust the timing. Other than that inspect the timing on the timing chain or the chain may have developed a slack.

Briggs 17hp intek overheadvalve on a john deere L100 has developed a hard start hard spin on compression stroke. new battery new starter

hi there

pauly46 here

if engine seems to labour when trying to start as if too much compression ?

try adjusting to in and ex valve clearance to 0.003" inlet and 0.005" ex

inlet valve is the bottom valve, and has a alloy push rod. ex valve is top valve and has steel push rod ( as viewed from the front of the machine with rocker cover off ) )

note rotate engine with plug out to tdc compression stroke , then rotate it down the bore on power stroke by 1/4 inch ( 6.35 mm ) this is the point for setting in / ex valve clearances

manual says 1/4 pst tdc on compression stroke - this eliminates decompressor lift from the setting

cheers hope it hepls

first of all with 3 cylinders 25lbs -1 100lbs. you have a problem with the vavles i think you have some bent vavles thats why low compression on 3 cylinders. check rockers or lifters but thats where it is foresure.

Engine turns over with spark plug out but as soon as put plug in it turns over till piston comes up on compression stroke I am thinking time for new starter ?

It's possible that just the valves need to be adjusted. Instructions are on the Briggs site. These OHV Intek engines have a built in compression release that causes the problem you are having when the valve lash is out of adjustment. It's a relatively easy fix and you only have to remove the valve cover (4 Bolts) to access the rocker arms to adjust. For your info the web location is:

Go to paragraph "Adjusting Overhead Valves."

It sounds like the compression release is not working,it works by opening the exhaust valve during engine cranking. For the compression release to work the valves have to be adjusted, especially after the engine is broken in.Set the engine to top dead center on the compression stroke, the exhaust valve should be set to .004 and the intake to .002. I think you will find the exhaust valve is way too wide which is causing the hard crank problem.Set the valves by adjusting the nuts on the rocker arms,it should be a torx set screw located in the rocker arm.First back the torx screw out about a turn then hand tighten the rocker stud with the feeler gage in place then tighten the torx screw down to lock the setting.
