Question about Kenmore 73503 Stainless Steel Bottom Freezer Refrigerator

1 Answer

Air is not circulating properly. will not make ice cubes due to cold air not making it into ice compartment. there is a circuit board inside rear access panel and when the test button is pushed, it seems to test all functions. at that time the air circulates ok but all display led's are lit and none of the buttons do anything. if test button is pressed again, a 22 is displayed in the fridge and freezer setting display. if pressed again a 33 is displayed. pressed one more time to go back to normal mode but with no air circulation. looking for reason that the air is not circulating. Kenmore model 795.78403.801 about 2 years old thank you

Welcome to FixYa.
Based on what you're describing, I'd suspect the issue is with what LG (that's the builder of your model of Kenmore) refers to as the "duct connector. (don't ask me why they call it that ?)
First though I'll ask you, it's important to note if the fridge provided any error code when this problem originated ? something like a "ERR-FF" in the display ?

What it is essentially is a blower motor inside a duct assembly that provides cool air to the icemaker assembly, as shown here...

It's a little pricey for such a small component at around $130 - $160USD. but don't confuse it with the other motor in the freezer which is the evaporator fan motor, they are not the same nor are they interchangeable.

I may have a test program I can provide for you and I will search my files as soon as I post this, but based on my experience it is likely the culprit.

I'll watch for your post and be glad to assist you in solving this problem in whatever manner I can.

Thank you for choosing FixYa.

    Hello again,

I found some info I alluded to in my initial post, I new I had it on this PC somewhere.

First you can initiate a test mode for functions as follows below, if the attachment is too small to understand let me know. I can email it to you if you want to provide an email address.

The other way to test the ice maker fan motor directly is via the control board voltage/value test on connector #4 as shown here.

**This test is intended for experience technicians and requires the unit to be energized/plugged in...please use caution**

At the control as shown above, test the pins for voltages indicated here...

Let me know what you discover through these suggestions and I'll assist you in any manner I can or if you think this is something beyond your scope of doing it yourself please call in a first.

Thank you for choosing FixYa. Please take a moment to rate the solution/assistance I've provided here for you today. Good luck.

Ice cubes are too thin. Making on time, but no volume due to small cubes. What part will correct this?

Well this thing is made to make ice cubes so if the ice cube are to small thin then you water supply must be restricted because its cold enough to make the ice just the volume of water isn't their .Check the feed system for restrictions .

Upper portion (frig not cooling properly) Lower portion (freezer) forming ice on #3 setting.

Is it forming ice or frost? It sounds like an automatic defrost problem. If the freezer frosts up it won't circulate enough air up to the fresh food compartment. Try defrosting it manually for 24 hours by shutting it down and leaving the freezer door open. Afterwards, if it resumes normal operation I would bet that there is something faulty in the defrost circuit, i.e., defrost heater not working or defrost control.

The problem is most likely either the defrost timer, and/or the defrost heater element(s) are faulty. The problem is that the defrost heater elements are not functioning properly and the evaporator core is actually freezing up and blocking the air flow through the evaporator core and also freezing up the thermal sensor, and when that happens there is no longer enough cold air being circulated through the refrigerator (that is actually how the unit operates and air must be able to flow through the evaporator core and then be circulated throughout the refrigerator to properly function) and as a result the refrigerator stops functioning and food can even thaw out in the freezer although the freezer seems to be iced up. (Usually at the rear wall where the evaporator core is located)

(Air flow through the evaporator core and cold air circulation and re-circulation through the refrigerator is performed by the air circulation fan and it also must be functioning)

Be sure to only use a blow dryer (with a towel on the bottom of the freezer) to thaw out the evaporator core and do not use any hard or sharp objects or the evaporator core can be damaged. The defrost timer can be located inside of the refrigerator itself, (see lower image) or it can be mounted outside usually either behind the air intake cowl or kick panel at the front base of the refrigerator, or most likely located behind the service panel on the rear of the refrigerator, and usually if the defrost timer is turning then it is most likely working, however the defrost timer can move very slowly and you can place a mark on the timer and the housing to check after about fifteen minutes to see if the position on the defrost timer has changed. The deforst timer on newer digital models can be built into the circuit board and is not a seperate timer mechanism.

Here are some images that should be similar to your situation to help assist you, and let me know if you require any further assistance.

Freezer side will not keep ice cream, popsicles or orange juice frozen. it will make ice in ice cube trays-the ice maker makes very few ice cubes.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

, defrost heater, defrost thermostat.

Ice maker is making crushed ice even though the switch is on cube

If you remove the bucket you will notice in the rear of cabinet that there is a u shaped metal arm that rotates the bucket auger. The arm rotates one way for cubed and the other for crushed ice. If the motor operates one way then it should go other way as well. Control for this is the actual selection switch above dispensor compartment. It is a circuit board and would need replaced for proper repair," removing cover can be difficult it depends on the type," If you don't mind crushed all the time then you can remove bucket, there is a U shaped arm, remove it and panel in rear of freezer, on the motor that arm was bolted to, reverse the two wires in order to make motor run opposite of previous setting," motor is designed to do this, switch offered selecting either way and now doesn't work." This is a permenant solution to change to cubed same thing would have to be done. The circuit board isn't to expensive and once you figure out how to remove it is a much easier repair than other way.

GE side by side not very cold on fresh food side

there is one of two thing that could be going wrong here ; you may have a bad evap fan mtr and control board or yourr damper is not opening properly. i would say you have the later of the two due to the fact the rf is still making ice. one thing that causes this issue is too much weight in the door causing the door to lean and not trigger in door light switch or the switch itself is damaged. the door hinge and camm assembly can be adjusted from the bottow using a standard socket set

1st.Check the freezer door gasket for any place it maybe torn or not making a 100% seal when you close the door. That would make temperature drop. 2nd.take off bottom kick plate so you can look under the refrigerator.Using a flashlight make sure there is not alot of lint / dust stuck on the coils .If there is remove it carefully and you will see temperature lower. PLEAS RATE THIS!

Defrost system problem. Could be in heaters, defrost thermostat, or defrost timing circuit. Freezing in vegetable section is due to air back flow related to frozen evaporator coil in freezer compartment.
Colder air settles and warmer air raises.

Ice maker problem is separate. Bar up engages micro switch that is supposed to shut it off. Bad micro-switch?
