Yes many monitors (with the exception of some HDMI connections) require a separate cable to connect audio to the built in speakers on the monitor. I hope this answers your question.

How do i get the sound to work on my HPw2207 monitor? Are there built in speakers?

HP w2207 has built-in speakers (Integrated rear facing). All you have to do is connect the LCD and PC (Sound output) using Audio Cable (Stereo).

No sound from built in speakers ive checked

Feed it with an MP3 player, it it still does not work then more likely the power amps inside may have gone out, it will not be worth spending money on getting it repair becuase you will be better off spending the money on a good set of powered speakers that put out 100 time better sound quality tahn the monitor powered speakers.

No sound

no if external speakers work that means that the sound card is absolutely fine>
now let me tell u the computer itself doesnt have any in built speakers>
either u connect external speakers or the monitor that u use should have speakers built with it> then u connect the monitor to the computer then also use a thin sound cable from the monitor to the back of the computer on the green port

No sound

If speakers are built into the monitor, then there should be an audio cable that connects from the monitor to the green speaker out jack on the back of the computer.

If speakers are NOT built into the monitor, then buy a set of speakers from a store.

No sound from built in speakers

the built in speakers on the monitor are only speakers, they are not run through the video signal cable and have to be connected separately.
many monitors with speakers provide a stereo cable in the package but dont tell what the cable is for.
If there is a cable provided there will be a small jack on the monitor that connects to audio out on the sound card.
There may also be a stereo plug combined with the video cable, that likewise connects to audio out.
If the hardware is connected, there may be a volume control on the monitor that may be muted.
If the problem is a recent thing for a system that previously had working sound with this monitor, try the mute on the audio settings
