Question about Creative Labs ZEN Vision:M Digital Media Player

17 Answers

Firmware trouble I have the same trouble with upgrading firmware.Either I get stuck in the Recovery Mode or I have a black screen. My batterie is fully charged. Also tried Recovery tool and latest firmware on 4 different computers with new USB cable.Even holding the power button for awhile or using Window media player 11didn't make a change. Any more solution?

Ok, you cannot update your firmware WITHOUT the latest version of WMP.
If you receive an error message while installing WMP, you might have a crippled Windows version. Try re-installing windows from another cd or PM me so i can link you to a download of Windows XP.

Do the firmware update with zen connected to USB and to power adapter at the same time, this often fix the problem.

If you succeed in completing firmware update your Zen will be fine.

You need a wall/AC charger for the operation. Plug in the wall charger and USB cable at the same time. Your Zen should power on when connected to direct AC power via the wall charger. Once it is powered on, connect the USB cable to your computer. Then begin the firmware download.

Let me know if it works.

If you computer fails to detect the player after you have formated it, try to connect to another with an older WMP version installed and see if different result. Some times WMP10 causes conflicts.

Hi Uklemm
As i can see that you have tried all possible means to get the firmware issue fixed, and to a conclusion i can say that the the main chip inside the zen is not getting updated as is has gone bad and there is no possibility to get the rom chip replaced. If it is under warranty then get it replaced immediately or you can buy a new one.

Hello,

Darklord actually gave you your best options which include diggin' into your machine and shorting an IC chip. This is not for the faint of heart. Use a blade screwdriver to short those two pins. Select the blade screwdriver with a blade width that will suit the job.

You stated that you had hoped FixYa could solve your problem.
Please Note: not all problems are solvable in an advice forum. You may need to rely on factory service. This is not uncommon.

When you choose to, you can close this thread and at that time you can request the money back guarantee. You may also receive an email where you will have the same option. Just please be aware that you do not have to pay unless you are satisfied with solutions offered to you. OK? And, just because we can't solve your particular issue it doesn't mean we have a poor success rate. There are just those times, when you actually need to seek warranty service from the factory.

Regards,
Worldvet

    Hello,
You, unfortunately, have a mp3 player that is hampered by a bad chip. There is nothing you can do about this problem. If you are under warranty follow that route. If you are not under warranty, try to get a refund from the place of purchase. Otherwise, you will have to get another mp3 player. May I suggest Apple?

    Regards and good luck,

OK ,, Here is a hard hack solution,,

1.) download hp format utility www.hp.com
2.) use it to format the player (it will erase everyting including the
firmware)
3.) install your new firmware..

Thats it your done..

NB:: if you computer fails to detect the player after you format it, you will need to hard reset the device by

  1. Open it up
  2. look for the largest IC, usually a samsung
  3. Ground of pins 3 and 4 (hold the ic facing you where you can read the print on it, then count 3 pins from the top left)
  4. while gounding pins 3 and 4, plug the usb cable back into the device(it must already be attached to the computer)
  5. It will be detectable now.
  6. reassemble and install firmware.

Sounds like a hardware problem, you may have to contact creative for service. theres clearly a problem if the firmware keeps freezing up over and over again.

Try this option also here's a reset hole by the side of the player. Try reseting it.

It can locked sometimes, and fix itself after a while. no apparent reason. reset, run the battery down and recharge.

    Hope it helps.

this is from the creative site:

The recovery mode consists of these four operations.

    * Clean Up: It is the least destructive operation. It scans a player's
hard disk and removes any invalid links from the music library. It does
not affect music files themselves. It is recommended that you perform
"Clean Up" first before formatting or reloading the player's firmware.

It is recommended that you clean up regularly if you frequently transfer files between a PC and your player.

    * Format All: It is the same as a Windows format performed in a PC, and
consequently all contents will be lost after a format.
    * Reload Firmware: Reloads the player's firmware (Operating System). It will also format the player.

Note : It requires the player be connected to a PC that meets the
player's minimum system requirement. Select this option ONLY if you
have access to a PC and you have downloaded the necessary firmware to
    install.
    * Reboot: Reboots the player. You can reboot the player
after performing a clean-up or format, or reboot it without performing
    neither of them.

It is recommended that you try these operations
    in the following sequence: reboot the player; clean up and reboot;
format and reboot; and finally, reload the player's firmware.

    If
your player seems to stuck in the recovery (rescue) mode, you can try
the "reboot" operation first, and format the player if necessary. If it
fails to reboot, you will need to connect the player to a PC, and
reinstall its firmware. For a detailed instructions on how to install a
player's firmware, please refer to Updating the firmware on a Creative
MP3 player, or refer to the Web Release note of the firmware download.

Unlike other hard disk based players, Zen Neeon does not have a rescue
mode. Though there is a Player Recovery Mode , it is for use when
    updating its firmware only.

    1. Detach your player from your PC , and ensure that it is turned off.

    2. Close all active applications (for example, Internet Explorer,
Windows Explorer, or Windows Media Player etc), as well as background
applications such as Norton anti-virus applications.
    3. Download
the latest device driver if you have not installed any drivers for your
player. The file name is MStorage_PCDRV_LB_1_07_00_250.exe.
    4. Double click on the file MStorage_PCDRV_LB_1_07_00_250 to install it. Follow the instructions on the screen.
    5. Hold down the Play/Pause button while connecting the player to a PC's USB port.
    6. When the Creative logo appears on its screen, release the Play/Pause button.

The player is now in Player Recovery Mode

After three months of trying and trying in many computers,
following many, many procedures found all over the Internet, my
Creative Nomad has accepted the firmware and has borned again.

    What I did?

    1.
Connected the Nomad on a computer with Windows XP and Windows Media
Player 9, that never has been touched by a creaive device.

It recognizes the device but can´t find any update to the drivers,

    2. Updated Windows Media Player 9 to Windows Media Player 10,

    3. Restart the computer

    4. Connect the Nomad and the computer recognizes the device and autamtically search and found updated MPT drivers.

    5. Run the firmware update program "ZenXtraP4SAudible_PCFW_LB_2_10_03 (Creative Zen Xtra PlaysForSure Firmware 2.10.03)"

    6. Finally the magic button always has been disabled was enabled so start reloading firmware.

And now the Nomad is working in windows vista.

    The
difference between the computer where the firmware works and the others
is that this has never had media player 10 or 11 and never has
    installed creative drivers.

Hope this can be useful to smoeone, somewhere, sometime.....

Try to reset, turn off your player (if possible) and push the end of a pin-like object (for example, a straightened paper clip) into the Reset hole. Press gently and remove. DO NOT insert any objects into the microphone. Turn the power back on. If resetting the player while it is detached from a PC does not resolve the difficulty, connect the player to a PC with Windows XP installed. Wait 10-15 seconds and then try the reset procedure again.

Hope that helps.

By the way when you try to upgrade the firmware are you sure that your Zen is detected as a external storage by your computer? because it can be the reason why you cannot update it because the computer don't recognize or did not install driver for it so it will be working fine while its plug in to the computer..

  • Mark Gil
    Mark Gil Aug 02, 2008

Ok try first to check if you can access your file inside it dont run the firmware yet, because its possible that your computer detect it but it did not install the driver for it as a external storage and because of that you cannot update the firmware.

  • Mark Gil
    Mark Gil Aug 02, 2008

Nope just what you zen contain, because if your computer is detecting it as a external drive you should be able to browse the content of it but if not there is a possibility that your computer did not install the driver for it and that is also the reason why the upgrade is failing..

My machine is not allowing me to update my firmware. My Zen Vision M is stuck in "Recovery Mode" and I can't upgrade it.

I had this same issue. My PC recognized the device, the firmware however did not. I found that by using the cleanup option on the "Recovery Mode" screen and plugging the cable in during the cleanup, the firmware software would recognize the device when it finished. If my zen was plugged in at the start of the cleanup it would just keep telling me to plug my zen in. Once i got through the firmware update i was able to boot into the menu system.

Creative zen

First off, download the Firmware upgrade from Creative (http://support.creative.com/downloads/welcome.aspx?nDriverType=4#type_4)

Don't run it just yet!

Now, go into the Zen Micro's Recovery Mode:

1. Take out the battery
2. Press and hold the ON/LOCK button in the ON position (far left) and put the battery back in the player.
3. The player will then switch on - wait until "Recovery Mode" appears on the screen then let go of the ON/LOCK button.

The Recovery Mode options include an option to "Reload Firmware".

Now connect your Zen Micro to your PC and run the Firmware upgrade. Your player should be recognized by the Firmware uploader. If it isn't, then then your player has other damage.

Hi,
Sounds like the actual firmware is corrupted. You might try loading the firmware on the Recovery Mode by using the firmware upgrade available at Creative's website.

Hope this helps

Philips mp3 player

If you have tried the reset, then it could be one of the following:
1. faulty charger - Need to replace it
2. Faulty/failing battery - Need to replace it
3. Faulty contacts / cable - Need to replace the cable or service the unit for faulty contacts.

If you are able to switch on the unit, try the following:
Please follow the steps below to recover and upgrade your player with the latest firmware:
  1. Make sure that your computer is online and connecting to the Internet.

Recovery mode

to reset this player -- take out the battery and put back again.
In the recovery mode do the following: format the HD, clean the firmware. If those two go smoothly, go to creative.com and download the firmware, connect player to PC(still in recovery mode) and run the downloaded firmware.

Creative Zen Touch stuck in "recovery mode"

Hello,

Have you tried to load the firmware? First you'll need to download the firmware to your PC from Creative's website: Click here. After you've downloaded it, connect your Zen via USB to your PC and open the firmware icon, then click "Upgrade."

Recovery Mode

I agree, use the Reload Firmware tool on recovery mode and then upgrade the firmware from the website. If you get "firmware failed!", then try it from a different computer.

Sansa mp3 player

Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.

Download the Sansa Recovery Tool from the Sansa website.
Format - Erases Everything: Connect your Sansa player to the computer and open Windows Media Player. Click on the Sync tab. Pull down the drop down menu underneath the Sync tab by moving your cursor over the Sync tab and left clicking on the little black arrow underneath the Sync tab. Highlight "Sansa 1GB" (wording may vary slightly), and then select "Format." - this should erase everything.
Firmware Upgrade- Erases Everything: Get the latest firmware upgrade from Sansa - it updates the firmware and erases every song in the player all at once. Note: this method doesn't work if already have the latest firmware. Go to this website and click "Firmware Updater" to find out: http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/DriverDownloads.aspx
