It is running too rich.

first check the air filter and clean it.
if thats ok then the carburettor has a problem, something like the needle valve failing to do its job or the float height needs ajusting.

try it temporarily without an air filter first to see if thats the prob.

Black smoke

Black exhaust smoke means the engine is burning too much fuel. The first think you should check is your air-filter and other intake components like sensors, fuel injectors and the fuel-pressure regulator. Other reasons could be a clogged fuel return line. Black smoke is usually the easiest issue to diagnose and fix, but burning unnecessary fuel will definitely affect your fuel economy, so don't think of avoiding this one to save money, it won't work.
Any smoke coming from your car's exhaust pipe is a sign that your car is in distress. Pay attention to what it needs to ensure more miles for your vehicle.

1985 Ford F150 302,5.0 Smoking running Rich and idling high and low

first of all u need to determine what color of smoke it is and is it coming out of the exhaust pipe. black smoke means excessive gas burning ...blue smoke means burning oil ...white smoke if seen in warm weather conditions means coolant leak into cylinder heads... but as running rich and high low idle might have a vacuum leak or carburetor need new base gasket or rebuilt ... good luck

Starts first time 2 pipe exhaust bottom pipe has a touch of smoke coming out, i cant find a manual, is that normal or did i buy a dud 16xxx klms

Jason,
If it is happening only in the morning/first start of the day then it is fine as some water vapour get condensed on the exhaust. And it is this vapour that gets exhausted in the form of smoke/vapour. Unless it is a black smoke there is nothing to worry about. Black smoke means that there is some oil being burnt. If so, then put a finger in the exhaust (cold one). If the finger has black wet soot then the rings need changed.

Black smoke coming out of exhaust, only on immediate acceleration. Leaves black spots on ground under exhaust pipe.

Your engine is running "too rich" meaning more gas is going into the chamber than is supposed to. If it is a late model, to need to see your mechanic. FYI , blue smoke is oil, black too much gas, white, antifreeze, (really bad).

Hard starting and to much smoke when engine running idle and sometimes fluctuation

Smoke usually there's a problem.... Bluish gray smoke means you're burning oil (could be a number of things like piston rings, valve seals)... White smoke means could mean you're burning transmission fluid, or there's a crack in the gasket or engine block.... Black smoke could mean you need your air filter changed, bad fuel injectors, bad distributor cap, ignition coil... I would guess it's probably black smoke coming out of your exhaust from the sounds of your symptoms...
