When HP laptops don't boot but blink the scroll and caps lock lights it usually means there is a problem with the motherboard or RAM. The ram can usually be removed from the bottom of the laptop with relative ease. Before removing the RAM or doing any work on the laptop please make sure that it is unplugged and the battery has been removed. Locate the door pictured below and unscrew and remove it. The ram is held in by two prongs putting pressure on the chip from either side. Push the prongs out and the ram should slant forward, out of the machine. Carefully remove the RAM and clean the connectors gently with a pencil eraser. Carefully put them back in and back between the pins. Place the door back on and screw it back in place. Try rebooting the laptop. If you don't feel comfortable doing this or if the issue is one with the motherboard, and your laptop is still under warranty you may want to call HP. If it is under warranty HP will most likely repair your machine free of charge. HP Pavilion DV5 Black screen - mthealey716.jpg

After cleaning my laptop with an airduster I discovered a problem. On turning on the laptop I had a black screen and the caps lock/scroll key leds were flashing. I read here on this site what I had to check. It turned out that one of my two RAM modules was faulty. Removed this module and everything is good. Thanks

On My Dv5-1125nr both the caps lock and num lock keeps blinking when i turn it on. It's wont boot at all. What kind of hardware problem is this?

First remove the battery and power cord for about a minute. Then plug back in and see if that helps. Otherwise please read the following:

LEDs near Caps Lock and Number Lock keys blink when starting notebook The LED lights near the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys will blink if an error is detected during the start up process. The LEDs will blink a number of times in a sequence and then stop. The number of blinks in the sequence indicates what component caused an error when it was being tested during start up. If the LEDs stop blinking and the computer does not start, you can press the power button again to repeat the tests. Count the number of blinks, and use the chart to identify the error condition. Knowing the number of blinks is helpful when you contact an HP support agent for technical help. Caps Lock/Num Lock LED Component Tested Error Condition LEDs blink 1 time CPU CPU not functional LEDs blink 2 times BIOS BIOS corruption failure LEDs blink 3 times Memory Module error not functional LEDs blink 4 times Graphics Graphics controller not functional LEDs blink 5 times System board General system board failure LEDs blink 6 times BIOS BIOS authentication failure

check by removing the battery then put it back again power it on, or without battery power it on directly then check, if still the same problem, the fault is in the motherboard of the laptop, better take it the service center or consult some technician in your area

There are a lot of hardware issues that could cause this, but it isn't your hard drive. I would contact wherever you bought the machine (Newegg, Best Buy, HP themselves, or someone else) to have them take a look at it. If you send it in for work, ask if you're going to get the same hard drive back.

I am having HP dv5-1102tu Pavilion notebook. After notebook power on, caps Lock & Num/Scroll lock continously blinking..... so kindly provide me solution.

open up the on screen keyboard in accessories>>ease of access. and then find all the drivers for your keyboard online. AFTER finding them online, then reinstall them.

if this doesnt work i would back up only my files and do a fresh install of windows.

Please search google for hp keyboard problems because there are MANY of them. recently i just had problems with my hp laptop keyboard.

BTW i sent in my laptop to hp and they just changed the keyboard no questions asked so if all else fails or if you dont want to reinstall windows or the drivers just send it to HP.

Hp pavilion dv5 wont start. the monitor remains blank when turned on. the board lights turn on, specifically the num and caps lock lights blink once every 6 seconds.

This unit should still be in warranty. If out of the first year warranty, HP has extended the warranty program for Video issues for a extra year from date of purchase.
Register your unit with HP, if not already and email customer care and log your video issue, ASAP.
I hope this has helped you.
