Question about Bosch Dishwashers

1 Answer

Hi, I have a Bosch SMS 4012 dishwasher. It's about 20 years old but looks (inside anyway) as good as new. It's only the design that ages it really, it's been brilliant and I'm loathed to replace it but I can't use it because the door handle/latch has broken so I can't open/close the door. It is possible to obtain this part, and if so then is it possible for me to replace it myself or shouod I call in a professional? Hope you can help. Many thanks. Pauline

Hello Pauline,

The handle and latch/lock are sold separately but both are still available direct from Bosch. This model was sold in the UK and Australia, but I'll assume for the moment you are in the UK and provide details for for ordering parts in the UK.

Plastic handle for Bosch SMS4012
Bosch part number: 056219
Price: £5.12

Lock for Bosch SMS4012
Bosch part number: 056218
Price: £19.13

Both parts are in stock and ready to ship. Bosch have a standard delivery charge of £5 per order.

You probably only need to order one of the above parts. You said it wont open/close, so you probably only need the lock unless the plastic handle is cracked/broken as well.

With regard to replacing it yourself, it's fiddly and requires some dis-assembly of the door and control panel but it can be done on a DIY basis if you're patient, practical and you know the difference between a pair of pliers and a screwdriver ;) (you'll need both)

It's not the most difficult job on the washer but it's not the easiest either so you may want to consider calling a professional. You could also order the parts yourself and pay someone to fit them as this usually saves a bit of money, but you should inform them beforehand that you will be doing so. Some engineers make extra profit on the parts and aren't keen on having the parts supplied!

Either way, the parts are still available so the dishwasher can be repaired. If you are not in the UK please let me know, but the part numbers should be the same wherever you are.

If you decide you want to try replacing it yourself, I can provide further guidance, but this washer was made before I started repairing dishwashers and I don't see many of these washers now. It's one of those repairs I could do if I had the machine in front of me but providing step by step instructions without being able to see it is a little more difficult - but not impossible! You will probably have to figure out one or two bits for yourself . . .

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you would like further assistance.

I have a bosch 7801 dishwasher that is 12 years old and is not heating the water? I presume that this is the heating element so is it worth fixing or should I buy a new one?

The new ones don't have a heating element. They tell me the US government doesn't allow them anymore because it's not "energy efficient". My 20-year old Kenmore washed better than my one-month old Bosch. Fix it if you can!

Bosch SMS 4012. Water very slow to enter machine

The solenoid valves do gum up. Replace that and it should work fine. They are not very expensive. You could try to clean it, but it is easier to just replace it.

Bosch dishwasher sms 4012 stuck in the wash cycle and goes on for hours without moving forward

Check the temp of the water in the machine. It could be too low and the machine is trying to heat it and cannot. If that is the case, it is either a sensor or the heating element.

Our Phillips SL2000 dishwasher (~20 years old?) has a leak from the door right hand bottom end when its splashing. The seals appear to be OK to touch and slightly pressing the door inwards does not reduce...

When one of the sprayer arms develops a leak and sprays water in a downward direction toward the bottom of the door it can leak because it's not made to be sprayed on the seal in that direction. You might get wet but hold the arms still and watch for a leak while it's running or inspect with flashlight.

No manual for my dishwasher

This is not the kind of thing you want to tinker with without a manual. You'll need the model# and serial # to contact Bosch and get a manual.

Looking for a dishwasher!

Hi, your friend is right. Bosch are really good, but parts are really expensive. You will have to be very unlucky to get a Friday afternoon machine. In fact in the UK they ones offer 2 years g'tee parts and labour, but from my experience the worst that can happen is the PCB burning. And that is very expensive to repair. Apart from that, they are extremelly rialable machines. Hope this helps
