POST MORTEM: Motherboard replaced and all the old components including the PSU re-used. Boots up fine now. All is well.

Conclusion:....on a good PSU, a bad motherboard can keep the fan from running.

    Thanks for the response.

Test your PSU or replace it if your power supply units fan is not working your PSU is faulty

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect/ boot up a computer hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

hope this will help

2007 Chevy Cobalt hit by lightning, low speed fan remains on, no ignition

do you mean the radiator fan or the heater cooler fan. radiator fan is the relay in the engine bay tap it it should go off if not replace, heater fan and cool the control unit may be damaged lung can do that to electronics. remove the battery make sure you have your codes to hand when you put battery back on. remove battery leave for 10 min with this off. then using some wire connect the live and negative wires on the body not the battery this should discard the static in the electrics. but make sure it 10 minuets before doing this.when you put battery back on the fans should not be running, if it is the lightning has fues the board and will probably need replacing.

No power to EL1852

You're talkign about an emachines computer. If you don't have power.. things to check:

Cabling..outlet, etc.. is the outlet is good..cable is good..

Next thing to consider, assuming the box hasn't been damaged (lightning/water/etc)... is the powersupply. It's likely a local repair center can check/replace that for you... if its not that, you're in for a new motherboard.. (read--upgrade).. on a positive side..your data should be intact.

Voltage not going to cpu

Not sure just what you mean. If your computer is plugged into the wall and the power is turned on, the power supply should be on and the cooling fan turning. Also, the CPU fan should be turning and the hard drive should spin up.
Note that the power supply is the main component that must be supplying the power. If you don't hear or see the fan turning in the power supply and the little power light on the front of the computer does not light, replace the power supply.
If your power supply is running and nothing else is running, I would unhook all devices and leave just the CPU and video and memory in. If you get nothing, then the motherboard is probably bad.

Your reasoning about the switch mode power supply being damaged is probably right.
Bear in mind that this power supply may not be the only thing that may be damaged in your computer.
You won't know for sure until you borrow a power supply and install it into your computer to see if it will work again.

Motherboard power

hey, without seeing it its quite hard, if the cpu fan aint running you have either not connected the cpu fan cable up, or connected it to the wrong place,
are you sure you fitted the cpu the correct way round when you removed it,
and depending on the processor in the computer make sure you aint damaged any of the pins etc on the cpu.

if you can supply some pictures or something can probably help you better

I have a 58'' HP Pavillion Projection screen TV. It was struck by lightning. the power cord is good. It will not turn on at all, no fans running, etc. What do you think I will have to fix?

As u have just said that it was struck by lightning the only way to get the TV back working is to replace burnt items on the moterboard .becouse lightning must have demaged some components on the power supply, if possible i would preffer a new power supply board

My dell was hit by lightning and now i cant get it to boot up

hi there;

really, lightning has a great power voltages supply, thousand of volts was supplied in one strikes of lightning.this depend how much voltage was induces on your computer, mostly your avr and psu might be damage by checking if there is power determining the fans inside avr and psu if running maybe you have the power, and some led light are blinking ,some how to be sure you can use multi tester if you have knowledge on this.basic approach if you have black out screen and good power supply, pull out ide cable of hardisk and cd room from mother board, you can run pc w/o them to check your start windows if will open run your pc if still black screen, take another video card and memory card try to replace them and rn your pc,if windows open fine if not maybe you have damage the mother board from lightning.replacing defective devices can put back your windows open.best regards

My cpu got a power surge during a lighting storm an burned up my power suplie ive replaced it an now the power light will come on when i push the power button on and the fan on the mother board works but...

In addition to your power supply, your motherboard was also probably affected by the surge. Most surges do damage beyond the motherboard. The power supply is still supplying power to it, which is why the fan runs and power lights come on, but it probably isn't doing much more then that. You might want to start looking for a motherboard replacement. The best and most inexpensive place is www.tigerdirect.com.
