i had the same error, i found when i would take the toners out it would only recognize my yellow toner as missing, none of the others would show as missing, i replaced the yellow toner and it was fine after that, the yellow toner happened to be a remanufactured toner and had a different toner chip on it as well. also just an fyi,the dell 5100 color printer is a rebadged xerox 6250.

Hello, it is likely that the transfer roller requires replacing. You may be able to purchase the roller from a local office supply, otherwise buy on line. However, there is more to it...
The error means, the Transfer Roll Cannot start servo operation. Verify correct cable connections from the Engine board to the HVPS (high voltage power supply). Make sure there is continuity between the transfer roller and its contact on the HVPS; replace the transfer roll if the continuity is correct.
If there is no continuity, make sure the HVPS contact returns to its upward limit when depressed, and make sure the left bearing of the transfer roll is making proper contact.
If the wires are all connected correctly, and there is continuity through the roller contacts, replace the roller.

The new magenta cartridge you put in is bad. If you put the old one back in then you get the low toner message. Take the new cartridge back and get another new one. I found the answer on the dell troubleshoot website

Hi You can Try
Error Code 5100
Clean the timing strip.
The purge cap (the white sliding mechanism that the print head parks to when it's not in use) may be not lubricated well enough .
Lubricate the sliders with some white grease (don't get it on the small wipers or the black caps); this repair probably require to remove the right panel off of the printer to gain access to the purge mechanism.

This error message indicates that the printer has failed to read information from the chip on the black printer cartridge.
This is either.
1. Black cartridge not fully pushed into place (I've been called out to a couple like this)
2. Faulty chip on the black cartridge - effectively not responding to the printer 'talking' to it.
3. Fault on the main board of the printer.
1. Push the cartridge fully home.
2,3. If you have an old black cartridge, try that. The message should change to Replace Toner, if it does, its the chip on the cartridge, if it doesn't its the printer.
