Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

Hi! I have an amana bottom freezer. The freezer wasnt as cold as usual and I noticed some frost on the back of the freezer. I melted it with a hairdryer, and cleaned the back of the fridge with a vacuum. The freezer is working great now, BUT, after I open the fridge door, the frdige makes a loud buzzing sound. It stops after a while if I dont open the fridge door again. Whats going on? Thanks so much! Cindy

Hello Ben, When the technician was there did he take apart the freezer to melt the built up frost,if he did it will work till the frost builds up again, If it wasnt defrosted perhaps jostling the wires has temporarly fixed the problem with the control but real soon it wont work once again

The upper portion of the freezer turns off, causing the ice to melt. And the cooler side bottom drawer turns into a freezer. I can't figure out what's going on.

You have a frost blocked evaporator. Translation: The cooling coils, located behind the back wall inside the freezer section, have plugged up with frost (usually caused by a burnt out defrost heater, located at the bottom of these coils) which prevents the cold air from circulating inside the freezer, and into the top of the fresh foods section. At the same time, this blocked air flow allows very cold air at the bottom of the freezer section to migrate back into the bottom of the fresh foods section, and thus freeze item in the bottom bins of the refrigerator. Unload the freezer, take the shelves out and remove the back panel. Melt the frost with a hair blower, and change out the heater at the bottom.

Amana AFB2534 freezer is regularly getting frost buildup at the back. first 2 times it was so bad that it blocked the vent & prevented cold air from reaching the refrigerator. Freezer just doesn't seem...

This is either of three defrost parts. The timer, heater or defrost limit switch. Most amana's I fix have a bad limit switch which is clipped to the freezer coils directly. Spin your defrost timer till it clicks and check the same frost laden wall to see if the frost starts to steam and melt. If not, unplug the fridge, then try disconnecting the limit switch and join those 2 wires together. Replug and see if the heater starts steaming. If it doesn't it is most likely the timer. The heater is usually the last thing to die, unless your heaters are encased in glass. In which case a quick visual inspection for decay and separation will pinpoint the problem.

the ref. is pulling in air from the gasket.check gasket by using a dollar bill.shut the freezer door with dollar bill between gasket and freezer.if you can pull the bill out wit ease then you must replace gasket.if frost is on back panel then you have a defrost problem.but it sounds like a gasket.

Amana neither fridge nor freezer getting cold enough

the defrost system has failed. to get it working temporarily, take the back panel off inside the freezer. melt ice off with a hairdryer.
after that, fault can be in several areas - defrost heater, thermal fuse or the main pcb

Amana BX22A2W - freezer works, fridge not cooling

Same problem here with an Amana refrigerator with the freezer on the bottom. I removed the back panels and vacuumed dust and cat hair out. The back panel in the freezer was frosted over with ice on the bottom. I removed the shelves and food and used a hairdryer to loosen the panel. The ice maker made it harder to remove the plastic panel so I pulled it back and saw the cooling fins frozen solid. I used the hairdryer to melt the ice and a shop vacuum to collect the water. It works like new again.

Frig not cold but freezer is ice maker not making much ice either

Is your fan blowing in the freezer? Frost on the back wall of the freezer usually indicates a defrost problem... defrost themostate, heaters, take back panel off and check evap for frost build up and if your fan in working.
