You need to install a webcam related software like Skype or Cheese.
You can find it on the ubuntu software center or install it directly from a terminal:

sudo apt-get install skype cheese

I bought a webcam but I don`t know how to start to go to skype or take picture or connect to computer. Does not have a C D , just usb

If the Webcam does not include a CD, the drivers (the software that runs the webcam) should install itself automatically when you plug in the drive. If you are on windows, make sure you have Windows Update enabled so that it can search for the right drivers.

To start using it in Skype, simply open skype, go into the Preferences, and set the webcam as your camera video chatting. To take pictures, you will need software to control the webcam. http://www.yawcam.com/ is a free webcam software that will let you take pictures with your new webcam.

Hi,

I don't think its your webcam that is at fault. I think it's already in skype. I have the same Lenovo model and there are times skype doesn't transmit video. So, I usually do is turn on and turn off the skype video call for the video to reappear. Can you do the following:

1) Make sure you have adequate lighting. Sometimes if you are in a dark room, skype will also transmit black videos to the other end.

2) Have you checked the video settings in skype? Go to Tools->Options. Click video settings. Click webcam settings and try to tweak your video from there.

I just bought a compaq laptop, then downloaded skype. and my webcam doesnt work..how do i get it to work?

Skype is very particular about having the latest drivers installed so that's the first step
Check your set up

In addition to the webcam software you will need to check the support software - Microsoft DirectX . This comes pre-loaded on most Windows computers but has to be updated - I am currently on version 11
To start the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, click 'Start', click 'Run', type dxdiag in the Open box, and then click OK
Run through the tabs checking the 'notes' windows for information and faults.

The version will be shown on the 'Systems' tab

SKYPE SET UP

Connect your webcam

Test your webcam here to make sure it broadcasts ok - Hit 'Allow' in the top window and check your cam in the left hand panel.

http://www.testmycam.com/
Not working ? - troubleshoot your drivers and software - get your cam working before moving on

Working OK ?

Set your webcam mic as default ( if it has a built in mic)

Plug in the webcam

TEST SPEAKERS
Right click on speaker icon in System Tray or from Control Panel
Select "Playback Devices"
The speaker icon ( checked as working) and volume level graph should be visible
Right click on the volume graph and click "Test"
Left hand speakers followed by right hand should be heard

SET DEFAULT & TEST MIC
Click "Recording" tab.
Right click on the volume graph and select 'Show disabled devices' and 'Show disconnected devices'
To set required (webcam) mic as default - click on mic font to highlight and click "Properties"
In lower dropbox display "Use this device enable" click 'OK'
Click "Levels" tab and ramp up sliders ( adjust to suit later)
Return to "Recording". Test mic by speaking and make sure volume graph displays

Restart computer

CONFIGURE TO SKYPE
Connect webcam
Its good practice to disconnect and re-connect your webcam before you start (To reboot the webcam software) - if you have been using it elsewhere the SKYPE software may have difficulty in locating it, even if you exited the previous program correctly.
The reason being, the webcam software can remain hooked-up to a program and needs to be rebooted.
Mine, I just unplug it from the USB and plug it back in to reboot the software.
If yours is integral with the computer you will have to re-start the computer, use a keyboard shortcut or disable / enable the webcam from the Device Manager.

Start Skype.
On the 'Tools' menu, click 'Options'.
In the navigation pane of the Skype 'Options' window, click 'Audio Settings'
Run down the list setting your defaults
Select your webcam as the default microphone.
Make a free test call
Click 'Save'
In the navigation pane of the Skype Options window, click Video Settings.
This will launch your webcam
Adjust quality of picture in 'Settings'
Check the correct webcam is shown as default
Click Save
Test your webcam by making a Skype test call.
For more information about how to configure Skype Messenger, please visit the following Skype Web site:
http://support.skype.com (http://support.skype.com)

Before opening Skype disconnect your webcam for a couple of seconds - if its inbuilt restart your computer or disable / enable it from the Imaging folder in the device manager and do not open your cam for a preview but wait and let the Skype software take full control when you start a video chat.

I just bought my asus laptop and i do not know how to get the webcam to come on please help!!

It will be detected and used by software that requires a web cam such as MSN or Skype if you use the video conference feature. You can set the preference of your webcam with some menu item of those software. You laptop may come with some utility software you can find in start menu which can help you diagnose your hardware including your webcam. As it is a new one, the webcam will work for you. You just need some software either those video conferencing or picture taking ones.

I bought an hp G71 laptop and I want to be able to use the webcam it doesnt really look like the laptop has a webcam its just a small shallow hole at the top but the person that sold it to me says it has

The G71 series laptops do have webcams built in. If you download "Skype" you should be able to test it out and chat with people using that.

Also go to the start menu search bar and type in "webcam" and see if there is any preloaded software on the computer.

If there isn't anything preloaded then i suggest you download skype.
