Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

We just replaced the imaging drum on our HP 2840. Now when we print in color, we get the image we printed, plus a lighter version of the same image about 2.25 inches lower on the page, every 2.25 inches. We didn't have this problem with the old image drum. I tried putting the old imaging drum back in the printer, but the printer will not use it - the printer says it needs to be replaced.

A repetitive defect at that spacing points to the transfer roller. This is the roller in the bottom of the drum/cartridge cavity. Most likely you will need to aquire a Q3948-67920 transfer roller kit.

MY HP LaserJet 2840 has a brand new Toner cartridge. Now it won't print at all and we are getting a "OPC at end of life" prompt. What does this mean?

Imaging drum reach 20,000 (black only) or 5,000 (color), replace the image drum.

Supplies life
The life of the imaging drum depends on the number of black-only or color pages that print jobs
require. Imaging-drum life is also affected each time the device calibrates because calibrating causes the imaging drum to rotate. Imaging-drum life is measured in terms of number of rotations rather than number of pages printed.
The type and length of print jobs also affects drum life. A series of short print jobs uses more drum
life than an equivalent number of pages printed in a single large job. To extend drum life, print
multiple copies of a print job at one time rather than sending the same job to the device multiple times.
The life of a print cartridge depends on the amount of toner that print jobs require. When printing text at 5% coverage, black print cartridges last an average of 5,000 pages and cyan, magenta, and
yellow print cartridges last an average of 2,000 pages. High-capacity cyan, magenta, and yellow print cartridges last an average of 4,000 pages. (A typical business letter has 5% coverage.)

If this problem is only happening with the black drum, it sounds like the drum is not getting cleaned correctly, and the residual toner is staying on the drum and being reapplied to the paper again. Replacing the imaging drum unit should take care of your problem.

HP 2840 Ghost printing in the bkg?

That is called ghosting. This is typically caused by a worn or fatigued component inside the imaging drum unit called the primary charge roller (PCR). It is a small black rubber roller. If you are careful and confident you can clean this yourself, otherwise the drum unit needs replacing.

Please read in full before attempting.

!Do not touch the imaging components with your hands or allow any foreign matter (i.e. grease) to touch them either!

To clean the PCR you have you remove it from the drum. It is held in place above the actual imaging drum, just above the drum shutter. On either side you will see two screws down in the cartridge that need to be removed. Once they are out you simply retract the imaging drum shutter and remove the plastic bar above the drum. The PCR is attached to this plastic bar. I would recommend cleaning the PCR in place so as to not disrupt the conductive lubricate that should be in place. Use a lightly dampened, with ONLY steam distilled water, lint free cloth and gently wipe and grime off. Repeat with a clean section of cloth until the PCR is an even dark color. COMPLETELY DRY BEFORE RE-INSTALLATION. Installation is the opposite of removal, a magnetic tipped screwdriver will help. Good luck and email with any questions.

Replaced black toner..now printer won't print any

In this case, actually it is not the Black toner that got depleted. Here the message being displayed indicate that one of the color Toner supply need to be replaced as it got depleted and currently the printer is printing in Black and white using the Black toner cartridge.

in this case, to troubleshoot these issues please try performing the following and check for the results.

* 1. Check for the level of the toner cartridges:

a) Check from the HP Toolbox application. Here are the steps to be performed from your PC:

* Access the Toolbox software.
* Select the Status tab.
* Select the Device status option.

Here you can check for the supplies status in terms of the % remaining for each toner cartridges.

b) By checking the supplies status from the printer control panel display.

On the printer display when printer is in Ready mode the supplies status can be checked from the supplies level indicator. Each toner cartridge and the Imaging drum level will be indicated by a bar which varies according to the level of the supplies present.

c) Print the supplies status page from the printer.

* On the printer control panel menu, press Menu .
* Use the (Right Arrow) button to select Reports, and then press Enter .
* Use the (Right Arrow) button to select Supplies Status, and then press Enter .

If any of the color toner cartridges and the Imaging drum have a low supply level replace them with genuine HP print cartridges.

The part numbers of the consumables are as follows:

* Black print cartridge - Q3960A
* Cyan print cartridge - Q3971A
* Magenta print cartridge - Q3973A
* Yellow print cartridge - Q3972A
* Imaging Drum - Q3964A

HP Color Laserjet 2840 now makes ear-splitting whine every time

Did the noise start right after you replaced a toner? If so it must be a bad toner which is causing the gears to grind. If this noise happened out of the blue then it might be a bad fuser drive gear which is the gears that connect the fuser to the machine.

Not printing on left side of page

The problem is that the revolving drum doesn't contact the OPC drum proberly. You have to open the left side off the machine and replace the little white gear on the shaft that drive revolving drum. The gear has "jumped"one step and the revolving drum isn't parallell to the OPC drum. I fixed my 2840 last night it takes some time but now it works perfect.

Most Printers that are laser have a transfer roller or transfer belt. If you have replaced all the drums this can often be the problem.
