Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

Hi, Working with a Sears 1/2 HP garage door opener that can be activated by a wall button or remotes. No key pad. About a year ago, I replaced the old motor, since it only turned in one direction. I left the old sensors in place. It worked fine, until one of the lights on one of the sensors went out. The door would open with the remote, but would only close when the wall button was held. I replaced the sensors with the ones that came with the replacement motor (whole kit was purchased). After installing the new sensors, nothing improved and we carried on using the wall button. Now, even using the wall button doesn't work. The light just flashes and a click can be heard (about 5x's). The door manually shuts & opens very smoothly. I did remove the sensors from the back of the opener housing to see if that would help (in case they were misaligned), but nothing improved. Since I just installed the sensors, I do not believe that they are pinched, since they went through existing holddowns. Please let me know if the opener will work without the sensors being plugged in and what I might try next or look for to remedy the problem. Thank you, Russ

The opener will not work without the sensors. Make sure you don't have a broken wire going to the sensors. Make sure the small light on each sensor is lit and not flickering. If you cannot get both lights to come on you have either a bad sensor or a wiring problem. If the main light flashes 10 times it is definitely a door sensor problem. The wall control may be bad now from usage. Remove it from the wall and short across the 2 wires. If that causes the door to try to move you then know the button is bad. You can also short across terminals #1 and #2. That would eliminate bad wiring to the wall control. Make sure the connections on the back of the motor unit are tight and that the 2 white wires from the sensors go to terminal #2 and the white wires with black stripes go to terminal #3.

See if the traveler is jammed up against either the stop bolt at the header or the stop bolt at the power head. If it is you should be able to turn the motor shaft with a pair of vice grips to free the traveler. Also, the operator will not close without the photo eyes connected.

If you didn't, try programming the remote this way.

Press and hold the button on the remote and then press and immediately release the smart/learn button on the motor unit. If this doesn't work you need to make sure you have the correct remote for the model opener you have. Your model number doesn't bring any results from Sears Parts.com.

I have a 1/2 hp craftsman opener. Remotes work fine. Wired wall unit has a blinking light on the open button and will not work Lock pad and light pad work but not the operate pad.????

Try pressing and holding the lock button for 3 seconds to stop the light from blinking. Your wall control may be bad. Usually when that light is blinking it is the remotes that will not work.

Press and hold for 3 seconds the button on the wall control that has an icon of a lock. The light should quit blinking and your remotes will once again work. Holding that button for 3 seconds toggles your openers vacation mode.

Craftsman 1/2 HP Garage Door opener problem

The remote and the keypad work through a signal sent to the receiver while the wall console, as you said it's wired directly to the opener, so it's likely that the receiver is shot. I'd try reprogramming the remote to just rule out the chance that all code wasn't erased first. (Press the learn button on the back of the operator head, stand back 5 feet and within 30 seconds slowly press the remote button a few times to see if it operates the opener). If this doesn't work, you can install an external LiftMaster universal receiver with the correct frequency and you should be good.
If there's a purple antenna hanging off the head, this is a 315 freq, use a 356LM, if black it's a 390 freq, use a 635LM receiver.
Then you'll have to reprogram your remote and keypad to the receiver.
Since there's also the issue with the light, there's also a possibility the circuit board got fried. Did you have any storms lately?

Garage door remote does not open door

I think you'll need to reset the wireless connection. Try pushing the button on the machine, then something on the pad. (or vise versa)

Door not opening

First, check the safety eyes. There should be a light on on each eye. If not realign until they come on. On the wall button if the green light is blinking press the lock button on the wall control for three seconds. The light will go solid. If either of these do not fix respond with more detail and I will help.

Garage Master 1/3 HP 1997 Door Working, not responding to Remote

I have the exact same situation, except my model (139.53607) is older than yours and does not even have an LED. Remotes only works after after shop light goes off (5 minutes or so), but wall button works fine. Did call Sears Service and the tech told me the logic board is probably shot. Don't want to waste money on service call so I'll probably have to buy a completely new unit in the Spring and go through the winter without the use of a remote.
