Stop complaining and make a backup of the hard drive (maybe with an external USB backup unit,) then install the English IME and default language with help from a Japanese (or Japanese-literate) friend in town. Some enthusiasts among them would have some apropos ideas on how to enjoy your make of laptop.

Obviously if you wanted to license and install an appropriate Windows for your country, you would buy it from a store you like. You could also install Fedora 9, OpenBSD, or Ubuntu, any or all of the OS mentioned at OSNews.com, even possibly Mac OS X Leopard.

Actually, you can still find XP selling at retail. Check online, e.g. Newegg.com. After you buy it, just put the disk in your CD-rom. You may have to set the CD-rom to boot first. You do that by going into the BIOS settings. Try hitting Delete, or F1 or F2 when its starting. Maybe the Vaio machine tells you which key to hit for [BIOS] SETUP when it POSTs.

If you are poor, and feeling adventurous, check Craigslist.net for locals selling OEM installations. Every major city has one or more of these guys advertising on Craigslist.

You will need a good disk recovery software. These utilities do come at a price. Email disk recovery experts such as Recover Data or Sony Vaio data recovery if they can help you.

Sony Vaio VGN-NR498E recovery disk

Hello

Well, the recovery disks won't allow you to go to your present system. The recovery disks are designed to put everything back the way it was when you bought the computer, minus all your applications and data. If it's your data that you need then a reputable repair service like mine can slave your hard drive to another system and recover all your data (not applications), provided the hard drive has not electronically or mechanically malfunctioned. Again, a reputable repair person can tell you the status of the hard drive.

Thanks

Hi, how do i do a clean reinstallation of windows xp on sony vaio VGN-NR310E with bootable xp disk?

First of all you need to boot from the DVD - enter BIOS and in Boot order put the dvd first and the hdd second.
If it's a recovery disk all you need to do is to put the disk in and follow the instructions on the screen.
If it's a retail one you will need a lot more - starting with the fact that retail XP disks cannot install on SATA disks without modifications either in themselves or in the way the BIOS manages them. More details are needed for that.

I need VAIO® VGN-FJ170/B Restore Disks

You can create your own disc from the Vaio recovery center.

If the computer is no longer booting up and the Vaio Recovery center is no longer accessible, you can call sony parts center to check if you can buy a recovery disc for your unit

Sony vaio VGN FS 742W notebook Startup problem. When swithed ON,Vaio,Window XP screen appears and then window 'isass' appears & notebook swithes OFF automatically.Pl.advise solution for the above....

If Windows appears, and start booting, then the problem concerns the operative system and not the hardware.

That is good news, because all you need to do is using the original computer recovery disk, or finding a Windows setup disk to reinstall Windows.

To reinstall Windows, start the computer with the Recovery Disk or Windows Disk inside and chose Boot from CD when asked, then follow instructions.

Regards.

How I can get recovery disc for my laptop Sony Vaio VGN-SR 26GL?

You probably need a recovery disk because you dont have the necessary drivers and the software that came pre-installed on your laptop. but instead of worrying about that, why not just get any operating system disk of your choice, install it, download the drivers for your laptop online and install them too, and interestingly you can also keep all the drivers you downloaded with the OS Disk incase of future necessity for your laptop repairs.
In case your decide to do this, the link to download the drivers for your laptop is :

Happy Installation!...lol
