Question about Hayward H Series Pool & Spa Heater 400k Btu Propane Gas Milivolt Ignition H400p1

2 Answers

I have an H400 Pool heater, 5 yrs old. I get the LO error w/ the service light on. A service guy looked at it and said I needed a new control panel board ($265)+ installation. I have always maintained the pool system well and used the heater 1 or 2 times at the beginning of the season(so 10 times max). Is this part so delicate/ unreliable as to go out after so few uses? Might there be any recourse through Hayward?

Where are these switches located? Does the solution by the serviceman seem reasonable, a new board? Do you think I have recourse w/ Hayward based on such light usage?

This seems like a canned reply. You did not even address my questions in my initial email.

Hi,
To address your questions...

First..yes the control boards are kinda fragile and it has always been a question in my mind as to why on earth any egineer would ever design an outdoor unit with a circuit board basically exposed to the elements...just a bit of condensation on a foggy morning or a rainy day can fry those boards...extreme temperatures of hot and cold also can expand and contract the board and cause the solder points to come loose...
so yes, it does sound reasonable that the board is bad...

Now, after the first year Hayward will not replace anything in there electronic...they know that the parts will last a year but really don't care about beyond that....they make more on parts then new units anyway....

Next... make sure your service guy will warranty his repair for a year....and that he will return the old board back to your unit if it is not the problem...make sure to have someone there to watch over his shoulder when the repair is made...if the board is replaced and it does not fire the old board goes back and he finds the offending part and replaces that one labor free...if he agrees to this he is telling you the truth... if not the he is blowing smoke up your **** and really is not sure what the problem is...

My feeling is that it could be the water flow sensor, but hopefully the service man has checked and eliminated that, cause the next thing would be the board...

I hope this has answered your questions...

Comment back if you have more!!

Hi

LO is an error code dealing with the safety loop, high limit switches, water pressure switches. Check for continuity and the wiring between the high limit switches and the water pressure switch. Also, check to make sure the filter is clean and the pump basket is empty. These also can cause a low flow situation that will cause the pressure switch to not close properly.

I have a Pentair minimax 250k electronic. Opened pool today and when I turned power on to the heater, it won't get through startup sequence. Dashed lines flash, then 888 and service light comes on. ...

Most of the time I have found the problem to be the thermistor. It is located on the water manifold of the heater. Usually the panel lights, flashes then to 888 and back to dashed lines. SW light is green, and service light is red. It costs 25 to 45 dollars, and takes 5 minutes to repair. New thermistor looks identical to old so replacing it is very easy.
thanks please let me know if this was helpful

I have a Hwayward Heater (5 years old), It displays an error code "CE", a pool repair guy came out and noticed all of the conduit and wiring form the panel to the heater was rusted and old.and...

Thank you for posting your question here on Fixya.com.

"CE" is a communications error. Your instruction manual, found here, states:

"If communication between the ignition board and the display board is not established within 3 s of power-up an error will be displayed. After communication is established, if it is lost for 30 s, the error will be displayed. The error code will be cleared upon a valid data exchange between boards."

Cycling the power off and on may clear the error but if it persists you will need to inspect the ribbon connection between the ignition and display boards. The fault can be the wire itself or either board. You need to find a service company that stocks the parts to come out and test the unit because the method for identifying the failed part is trial and error via replacement.

I have a hayward 400idl heater that is stuck in stand by mode. any ideas?

Hi
If you have a auto control system like a Aqualink,Aqualogic Put the controller in service than select heat. Check and make sure the service light is not on also. What happens when you press the mode button. If nothing and the button membrain looks good. open the front panel there is a ribbon cable that goes to the display and plugs into a control board in the back. Unplug the cable and plug it back in "Be Careful The Pins bend very easyly. Try the mode button again. Is there any error codes on the display?

Hi I hay a Hayward H400 pool heater. It is 2

This is a water flow problem and will be the by-pass assembly in the water manifold. Or their may be an external by-pass wich will be a valve bridging the inlet and outlet pipes for the water. This valve if you have it should be 80-90% closed to force water through heater. Before you do anything be sure to check to be sure the filter and baskets are clean. Often this is the problem.

Hayward H400 heater problem

LO usually indicates low water pressure. Check the pressure in your filter. You may need to backwash. If the filter is to clogged then the water pressure in the heater is so low that it won't activate the pressure switch. While checking the pressure turn the pump off and then on to make sure the pressure gauge is actually working. Also check the pressure coming out of the inlets into the pool. You should be able to tell if you have sufficient water pressure.
