determin if the speakers are at fault first. un-hook them and turn on the unit if it stays on one of the speakers is bad. if it remains in protect, the output transistors are shorted. there are a pair for each output. they are located on the large heatsink in the center of the unit.

SOURCE: Sony STR DB-930 Receiver jumping into protector mode

I went through the amp/receiver and used small star washers on all the grounding screws I could find including the one securing the transformer, cleaned dust off all circuit boards, checked output transistors and fuses, all OK.

Re Assembled unit and it worked OK.

I will buy a fan and fan it to avoid sourcing heatsinks for the previusly suggested IC's.

Thanks for the technical help, sure solved my problem.

Regards

Darryl.

SOURCE: stuck in protect mode

Protet mode is a special diagnostic mode that starts when a fault is detected.

When in protection mode the unit is prevented from starting by protection circuit, so to prevent further damage.

Check the speakers and speakers wiring, a contact in speaker wires, or faulty speakers can send the unit in protection.

Try unplugging power cable for one hour or so. then connect cable back and see if you get rid of protect state. Sometimes accumulation of electrostatic charges inside circuit capacitors can kick in protect mode. In that case unplugging the unit from main for some times can get rid of electrostatic charges, and reset circuits by draining power completely.
If that was the problem, you will not get Protect when plugging back power cable.

If you do all the above and still get Protect, then there is a real fault.

In that case the unit may be disassembled and tested to find the fault.

If that is the case I suggest contacting the manufacturer at the number listed on the owners manual, or asking a quote on repair to a local technician.

Str de 435 I was watching a movie nothing was being moved when suddenly I heard the relay click the protector mode came on thank you

Relay click and Protect display indicates that receiver got problem in output amplifier section and most probably output chips got defective. This kind of problem is not user level repair and local repair shop will help you to get it fixed.
Thanks.

Sony str-de545 protect mode?

Disconnect all speaker wires at the receiver and turn the unit back on. If it stays on, your receiver is ok and you need to reconnect speakers one by one and test until you find the one causing the "protection" once you find this, disconnect the wire at the speaker and test again. make sure the + and - wires do not touch! If the receiver stays on, use a multimeter to test the speaker for a short with resistance check. If your not sure how to do this, any home audio shop will test it for free and while you wait. If speaker wires are disconnected and it still shuts down, it needs to be serviced. Hope this helps

Help

check/replace your speaker wires. If a wire came loose, it will go into "protect" mode and shut down, to protect from a short circuit.
