Question about Kustom KPM4100 PA Amplifier/Mixer

1 Answer

I have a Kustom KPM 4100 amp head that's cutting out. It works OK for 5-10 mins then crak snap crakle then nothing. After a cooling off period I can repeat the process. I have pulled the power amp and nothing on the visual or smell test.. Re-powered, tapped all components looking for cold solder joint.. nada.. Any thoughts on where to go from here.. Thanks--N1MLF--

I agree on the thermal... There's a couple voltage regulators that get quite hot even without anu audio being pushed thru the amp... I dont know if it's bad regulators or something else downstream causing the issue.. I cant locate a schematic.. that would be an asset ..

Have you tried connecting a single speaker to each output and cutting the volume down to see if you have a load or impedance problem? The amp may be perfectly fine except it's trying to play to a 2 ohm or less load :-)

Thanks Carl.. I did a rewire on the system and tried it.. I went directly to 2 PA speakers, known to be good and both 8 Ohms

Then you're probably down to something thermal. Check the heat sink of the output transisitors, then, I guess it's time for new transistors.

Oops, grab some spray coolant stuff and try that also.

Hello. Where is the fuse located to be replaced in my Kustom KPM4060 Amp. Thanks Shawn.

I have the same problem with my KPM 4080 amp. I have no clue where the fuse goes. I'm sure mine also needs a fuse replaced.

My limiter is always on, no sound

Hi, i would like to know what you have running into the input side of the mixer and also what you have running on the output side. I am unclear, does it make any sound at all? Is your mute button pressed?

I have a KPM 4080 mixer that has a blown 1A fuse. What would be the most common cause.

The most common cause of a fuse blowing is excess current... now what has/could cause that is impossible for us to diagnose remotely. Failure in the power amp would be prime suspect with power supply components a close second. Double check that fuse rating... if on 120 volts it sounds low... it would be right for 220 operation.

I have a Kustom HV 100 hybrid tube amp. When I power it up, It will play normal for about 5 seconds and then the volume drops off. The preamp tube is only about 2 months old and this amp only gets played...

After the volume drops off, let the unit sit idle for a minute and then try it again. If the volume has restored for another brief period, suspect the filter caps are weak and voltage drops when you start driving the unit. In any case you need to have it serviced. Unless you can see the heater in a tube going out with vibration this may not be a DIY repair. If you see purple glow in a tube, replace it.

I have my first ever electric guitar with a kustom dart 10 amp. I understand that the amp has to be plugged in to the mains through a power cord, but the kustom dart 10 brings none. Is this normal.?

No, there is a cord. OFTEN the cord is buried in cavities in the plastic foam or in cavities in cardboard like spacers in the original box. For some small amps the cord is permanently attached and is coiled up in cavity behind the speaker.
