# How do i raise a number to a negative power using my ti-84 plus?

To raise a number to a negative exponent, you have to first enter the base number then press the button right below the 'clear' button and then press the 'negative button' that is located right next to the 'enter button'. then you can enter the number

To enter an exponent, positive or negative, use the EE (Enter Exponent) key (the shifted function of the , key just above the 7 key). Do 5 2ND [EE] (-) 1 0 / 5 2ND [EE] (-) 1 0 ENTER and you'll see 1.

What I think you're doing (I can't be sure without seeing your keystrokes) is calculating
5*10^-10/5*10^-10 which is interpreted as (5*10^-10/5)*10^-10, which indeed is 10^-20.

This key allows you to calculate powers with arbitrary exponents.
To obtain the roots to any degree you make use of the fact that n-th root of a number X is equivalent to the number X raised to the power 1/n

10th root of X = X raised to the power 1/10
10 th root of 2345 = (2345)^ (0.1)
For this case
2345^(0.1)=2.172772644

To raise e to the xth power, use e^x, which is the second function of the LN key to the left of the 4 key.

To enter a decimal exponent, use EE, which is the second function of the , key above the 7 key.

To raise a value to another value, use the ^ key, above the divide key.

Also, don't forget to use (-) instead of - when entering a negative exponent (or any other negative value).

You're not raising a negative number to an exponent, you're negating a number raised to an exponent.

If you want to raise -2 to the second power, you need to enter it as
( (-) 2 ) ^ 2

Without the parens, what you're getting is the equivalent of -(2^x)
