I can't get colors to line up

  • pounser Mar 13, 2009

I purchased the repair kit and replaced both convergence chips in my Sony 57WS500 rear projection TV. I unsoldered and checked all of the resisitors and they all checked 4.6 to 4.7 ohms, and resoldered them as suggested. I unsoldered all of the 3.5 and both of the 5.0 pico fuses and they all had connectivity, so did not replace them. The TV no longer has the bowed red convergence, but all of the colors are now not aligned, a 3D effect. My remote has no ability to do any alignment, but on the front of the TV I hit an alignmnet button that has the target, but nothing really moves. What do I do next? Please help me.

Yes, I have the orignal remote and do not see any menu or any settings I can go to that has anything to do with convergence.

I verified I have the original remote and still can't converge. My wife and I spent time on the Sony website and entered all kinds of special settings to see if we could get into the convergence set up and believe there are still problems with harware.

I believe a possible solution are the tiny pins may have been soldered together. The only way I can be certain if one or more pins are suppose to be soldered together is lto ook at print out of the back of the board and compare with what it looks like now. Can someome tell me how I can get a detailed photo of all of the pins at and around the back of and specifcally around the back of the convergence chips, so I can unsolder and resolder them if ncessary.

If anyone else has a suggestions, I am open to try anything before I throw my TV on the curb.

Ok, I used a magnifying glass and desoldered two pins which may have been soldered togehter and guess what, I fixed it. I had to go into the front focus settings and twick them to get the final 3D effect to go away. Anyway thanks to yoru website, I now have my TV back for about $65 compared to $500. but I did have to spend about 5 hours readings and working on the soldering. I could do much better next time.

Your TV has a convergence problem. Here are some of the most common symptoms.

Screen looks 3D
One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
Screen is bowed in or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence or magic focus section.

Try to adjust the convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Its a fairly easy fix.

You can get a repair kit that includes all the parts from The kit includes a photo instruction guide, original Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, etc.

Everything you need to fix it yourself.

You need the original remote to do the alignment. Do you have it?

None - I repeat - None of the convergence pins are soldered together. If you accidently soldered two side by side pins together desolder them and resolder them seperately.

Also, make sure that you check the 5amp and 3.5 amp pico fuses by removing one leg on each one. If they are blown replace them.
