Question about Compaq Presario V2608WM Notebook
This is going to be a problem with a component on the motherboard. The question is: how far do you want to go? If you just cringed a bit, stop right now, take the computer back, and tell them to get a new motherboard. However, if you answered "all the way baby!!!" then here's what we're going to do. Break the machine down and remove the motherboard, this way you can get to both sides. You will need an ohm meter or a power tester with an extremely sharp pointed end on the positive side. Plug the board in, be careful handling it, there are a few spots that you can get buzzed. Where the DC jack is on the board you will see the traces leading out to other ares of the board. The traces are the metallic circuitry in the board just under the green silicone coating. There are several traces leading out from the jack, so, one at a time, you're going to test for power along the trace every so many millimeters (approx 8-10mm) until you lose power. If you come to an area of no power, don't assume this is the only area. You need to follow each trace to the end, or at least until it loses power. If you lose power in the middle of an open trace, then the motherboard has a hair line fracture, and the whole thing is shot. You will most likely find that you lose power at a chip, capacitor, resistor, or some other component that is soldiered to the board. These are replaceable, but very difficult. They are generally surface soldiered by machine, which makes them hard to resoldier because the connection points that soldier to the board are generally tucked under the component. After replacing the component you need to run the trace to the end to check for other problem areas. If everything checks good, then you're ready to put the machine back together. This is what you will need to do in order to fix the machine. So, how's that "all the way baby" workin out for you now. Good luck, and if you need anything else, let me know.
