Have you tried using a different USB port? Sometimes certain USB ports on a computer stop reading the device.
Try using a different computer. See if that one reads it.
If all else fails, you may need to DFU-Restore the iPhone.
In order to do that:
1. Turn off the phone.
2. Hold down the power (the top right) and the home buttons.
4. Once the apple logo comes on, stop holding the power, but keep holding the home button.
5. Open up iTunes. It should say the phone is in restore mode.
6. Do your restore.
