Question about SmartDisk FireLite USBFLB120 120 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

My Firelite SmartDisk120 works fine on one computer running XP, but on my other computer (XP ME) it only works if I plug it in AFTER windows has launched. If it's already plugged in, my computer screen stays black with a blinking cursor. While this isn't earth-shattering, it is a bit of an inconvenience. Any suggestions?

Sounds like your Boot Priority is set to USB first. Go into BIOS and change the Boot Priority to CD/DVD, Hard Disks, then USB and you should be good. It is doing this because it is trying to boot from the USB drive instead of your hard drive. You unplug the external disk and so that takes USB out of the loop, then allowing it to move to the next option which is probably Hard Disks. So get into BIOS, Change Boot Priority, Reboot. You should be good from there!

Good luck!

Hi

A USBFLB80 is not a hard disk controller, it's an external USB hard drive and does not require any driver when used in Windows ME/2000/XP. This device is plug and play in Windows XP providing you have a working usb port to plug it into.

You can format it directly from Windows XP going in My computer then right click on your drive icon and hit format. Don't change anything in the fields but put a check in quick format.

How to backup your computer onto a firelite hard drive

VISTA: Hit the flag and go to computer. You should see the hard drive then if it is plugged in.

XP: Hit start and go to my computer and you should see the hard drive then if it is plugged in.

If this doesn't work try another USB slot for the dard drive. Some of your USB slots may be defective.

Plug 80 gig Firelite into windows xp, nothing happens

the disk drive letter/label might be incorrect.

you know how you have c: and d:\ and maybe e: and F: drives?

in Windows XP you can set those letters.
if you had it in a mates PC, or your friend plugged their drive into your PC, the drive letters might get 'out of whack'.

to correct in Windows XP - Right click on My Computer - select Manage.

then go to Disk Management on the left panel.

find the usb drive there, right click on it, and select Change Drive letters and Paths.
change to a unused drive letter, and save these settings.

all going to plan, the disk should load as it normally would.

this is not just for this model of portable hard drive, this is for any USB drives, penstick/memory sticks included.

Won't recognize on windows XP(SP3)

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use asoftech data recovery program to recover your files.

Firelite HD 160GB won't mount on PC

Try this site: http://sewelldirect.com/USBManualShareSwitch2To1.asp. Although you must purchase this "splitter", you can use the Hard drive on two different computers. CAREFUL! Make sure that only ONE computer is reading or writing to the same file at a time! If you have a crossover, the hard drive could crash!

Firelite 160gb HD not recognized

Make sure that there is no "HD protection", in which the hard drive can only be connected to one computer. Also, try going to google and searching for some drivers for your computer to download and install. Then try plugging your hard drive in again.
