My Maxator hard drive is plugged in and I got a message on the screen saying the "Hard drive has malfunctioned and is no longer recognised by the computer". The light was on, then blinked a few times, and then turned off after the message came up.

Plug the hard drive into a different usb port, or take it to a friends computer and try it there, if it works the problem is in your usb ports, these issues are hard to solve, but first make sure the drive is actually ok

maxtor has a good warranty, Im not sure how long, but look up their contact number and call them, you may get a new hard drive out of that effort.

One other thing i just remembered, sometimes the plug in power supplies go bad, even thougg the lights are on the drive still won't function properly, but the only way to test this is to plug in another power supply (unless you have a usb poweredd drive).

I'll give that a try. I have 2 of the same hard drive, so maybe that will work (if I can find the other power cord!!!) Thanks!

The message on my computer says: "A problem has

Hi,

This could be a problem with your hard drive.

Before taking it to a shop, please make sure you have NOTHING at all plugged in that wouldn't normally be there.

No USB devices (except KB and Mouse) - No memory cards - No external Hard Drive etc.....

All the above devices can be bootable.

The uProcessor can't find a bootable device and presumes your hard drive is no longer plugged in. Standard error message.
Check your BIOS for the hard drive listing. If it is listed there is no problem with the cables.
You will need your restore disc to boot from and repair your boot sector on the drive.

ST300003U2 hard drive powers up ok, power light on, message on pc "usb device not recognised " .one of the usb devices has malfunctioned and windows does not recognise it.

Try to plug it in to another PC to see if you get the same message. See if you can run a scan disk on it from Windows to see if it's bad or going bad too.

To be honest, device not recognised is a bad sign. :(

The thumb drive might have some fault.
Plug it in other OS mainly windows XP and Linux.
If still same problem persists after tried in Linux, problem is with pen drive.
You can ask for a replacement from the dealer as it has guarantee for 5years.

Usb not recognised

Hello ak1979 ...

1. You're plugging in your Transend USB flash drive to your computer's USB port (as you've done many times successfully before with this SAME flash drive)?

2. It says "windows not recognise usb drive due to malfunction"?
a. Is that EXECTLY what the error says?
b. Is "it" an error dialog (window that pops up), or an error message from your Windows Event error logs? If a dialog, are there any pertinent error message entries in your Windows Event (System) log [Start > Run > type "eventvwr.msc" (without quotes), then "OK"]?

Try a bit of deductive troubleshooting:
  1. Restart (Reboot) your system [for a fresh start, if you will].
  2. Try plugging in your USB flash drive again, but in a DIFFERENT USB port.
  3. Try plugging in ANY OTHER "known good" USB device into the same USB port(s) used thus far that failed.
NOTE: If you EVER get any indication Windows recognizes the flash drive (like no error msg, or it shows in "My Computer"), IMMEDIATELY perform a "Check Disk" on it:
  1. Start > Run... > type "cmd" (without quotes), then "OK".
  2. Type "chkdsk DRIVE_LTR: /f" (without quotes), then hit "Enter" [where DRIVE_LTR is the drive letter of your USB drive]. EXAMPLE: chkdsk E: /f
Good luck, and please post back:
  • to provide any corrections/updates/clarifications.
  • if you have any further questions.
  • to let me know how things work out.
