This is because your screen resolution is off. To fix this, Click "Start", "Control Panel", go to "Appearance and Themes" and select the option of "Change the Screen Resolution". There is a slider at the bottom of the screen that appears; slide it around and select "Apply" until you find the setting that you like best.

Download AND install the audio driver. Choose what Windows operating system you are using, first.

Driver: Small piece of software that allows the Operating System to communicate with a device

The device is the Audio chipset.
The operating system wasn't stated.

(Be sure to restart your computer after INSTALLING audio driver)

Using Windows XP for an example;

Scroll down a little, click on the blue Down Arrow to the left of -
Audio (1)

Click on - Download File - to the right.

Single-file download has a Green checkmark in it's small circle.
IF not; click in the small empty circle, to the left of -
Single-file download.

Then click on Continue in the blue oval 'button'.

A small window will come up -
Opening R99254.EXE
Click on Save File.

A small download window will come up.
Allow the file to fully download, then DOUBLE-click right on it.

(If a Microsoft 'squawk box' comes up, ignore it. Click on OK.
Second one? Click on Run)

At the bottom of the 3 small windows, click on Next, Next, and Finish.
If you are not asked to restart your computer, do so.

IF, this doesn't cure the problem, suggest your audio chipset is bad, on motherboard.
Since it is a laptop, NO; there is no replacing a sound card.

I'm having troubles with my resolution. All circle type of stuff such as icons, shrunk into ovals.

To adjust your screen resolution go to Control Panel-->Hardware and Sound and click Adjust Screen resolution in Display section.

You need to set your PC video resolution to the native resolution of this monitor, which is: 1440x900 @60Hz.

Dell GX260 has distorted video on Dell 19" widescreen. Circles turn into ovals.

Most likely the Display Resolution is not set to a 16:9 display aspect ratio (1366 x 768 for example) if you use a 4:3 ratio on a widescreen, then everything is distorted. Make sure the display is set to the optimal resolution You can look up you monitor's Optimal Resolution here:

Circles do not display as round, they are ovals instead. I just received my computer back, after the hard drive was replaced. Before that, the display was fine. I'm sure there is an adjustment somewhere,...

You should have 4 silver buttons on your screen. Menu,- , +, and select. Click menu, then image control. I know this is going to seem strange, but go to "clock" and adjust it. i am positive it will work. :)
