The joys of downloading from an unsafe source.
The PC should reinstall sound drivers automatically when it boots, if not go to the manufacturers web site and download a fresh sound driver for the sound card.

Could I have accidentally hit a key on my Toshiba Tecra that caused the sound to not work

There should be a speaker icon in the lower right, "taskbar" right click on speaker icon and click "adjust audio properties" if grayed out audio driver is missing, if okay! check the mute box and click apply, now check the box underneath and click apply, the audio should work.

Since rebooting i have lost sound from my speakers (laptop)

First verify you see a small sound icon in the Systray . If this icon is missing follow the below section
    1. Open the Control panel
    2. Open the "Sounds and Audio Devices" icon.
    3. Verify the "Place volume icon in the taskbar" checkbox is checked. If this option is not available or is grayed out, skip to the next section of this document.
    4. If you were able to check this box, click ok and close out of this window and the Control Panel.
    5. Double-click the sound icon in the Systray and verify that all the sound volumes are mid-way or higher.

Check Windows services. Right Click My Computer and Manage. Choose Services and Application

    Volume Icon has disappeared.

First, right click on the taskbar and select Properties from the right click menu.

Alternatively, you can go to the Control Panel and type the word 'taskbar' in the search box from the upper-right side. Once the search results are loaded, click on the link that says 'Customize icons on the taskbar'.

The Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window will show up on your screen. Here, go to the tab called Notification Area. In the System icons section check the Volume box and click on OK.

The Volume Mixer icon will now show up in the notification area of your taskbar

I hope that this information was helpful and thank you for contacting the experts.

Do you see the sound/speaker icon in the taskbar? Check it first if it is muted. If there is no sound/speaker icon in the taskbar, try to go to the Device Manager to check if there is a sound driver installed in your laptop.
