I have the same problem. I got a new bulb and it worked for about 1000 hours, then the new bulb started having the same problem. So, I was about to buy another bulb, and I figured why not try the original bulb. IT WORKED! For a couple weeks... Then it started doing it again. Obviously there was nothing wrong with the original bulb, and there is nothing wrong with the new bulb, but I have 2 bulbs that do it now. So, is there any way to just tell the projector run the bulb till it actually dies and not turn it off because it thinks it is about to die.

Ok, I contacted Optoma Support even though I am out of warranty. The problem is so common that a non-technician was able to diagnose the problem. She says that i need a new "lamp 75.83J01G002 lamp driver for HD72" which costs $99 + $18 shipping for ground. It is basically the power supply for the bulb. Since this is about 1/3 the price of a new bulb, I am going to try it. I searched the web looking for a cheaper price, but I think it may be an optoma only thing. When I get it, if it works or not, I will post here again to let everyone know. Also if there is a different non-optoma part number for the item, I will let you know that as well.

Well, the lamp driver fix worked for 4 months, got a lot more time out of the two bulbs that I have, but the issue returned and is causing problems again. The unit is defective. Manufacturer defective. If I could figure a way to rig the light to just stay on till it explodes, I would do so. At least that way I would feel like I am getting the full life out of the bulb and not getting ripped off by optoma. All solutions are temporary solutions. New bulb, will have same problem, new lamp driver, will give you a few extra months, it is becoming cost prohibitive to fix the issue.

Well, this is odd, but turning my projector right side up gave me an extra 6 months out of the lamp driver, it sounds stupid, but try it. I had it mounted on the ceiling and bringing it down and setting it on a shelf gave me a lot of extra time. However, the issue has returned. I ordered a new bulb ($119 ebay) and a new lamp driver($124 optoma). There are people selling bulbs on ebay without the casing for $119. I am going to mount my projector upside down on the ceiling again till the issue comes up again. I am resigned to the fact that this projector sucks, but repairing it costs less than buying a new one. My repair here will get me at least another year. I am going to be $243 out of pocket with shipping for the 2 new parts. I could go to the low end Optoma 1080p projector for $1000, but I am going to wait and see what issues come up with that unit before I dump another $1000 into a projector.

This just happened to me this week. My projector is now out of warranty. When this happened to me the first time, I sent my projector in and they replaced the bulb and sent it back. Everything worked for the next 1.5 years (1160 hours). I am hoping that a new bulb fixes the problem, but I would really like to get more than 1100 hours out of a projector bulb for once!!

Sound like the original color wheel for Optoma HD80 is bad.

If the unit has been moved when hot.

If not, try un-plugging the unit for a few minutes and re-connect.

Hope this helps

My Optoma ES522 keeps blinking all the colors of the rainbow and then going to grey. I have to turn it off four hours to even get it to start up again and then sometimes within minutes it happens again....

My Optoma ES522 keeps blinking all the colors of the rainbow and then going to grey.
It seems that's the color wheel problem. You can fix this by your own. Probably the dust covered the color wheel sensor so it doesn't spin at specific speed.

And the project is now telling my lamp is at the end of it's useful life. How much will it cost to replace that?

You can switch off lamp reminder in OSD menu settings. This reminder is usually set to approx. 1200+ hours. When you exceed this limit, reminder starts to pop up. Actually it doesn't tell anything about PJ's lamp condition. So that doesn't mean that something is wrong with your lamp, maybe it lose some brightens, which is typical phenomena wheen exceeding half of lamps lifetime.

GENUINE new lamp costs around 160-180€, COMPATIBLE COPY should cost around 100€ +

HD72I WORKS FOR 30SECONDS AND THEN SWITCHES OFF

I had the same problem with very few hours on the lamp. Sent it back to the factory and they said the fan was overheating causing the bulb to shut down. They replaced the fan and the bulb for free under warranty. I noticed before I sent it the projector was putting out an incredible amount of heat. MUCH better after fan replacement.
