Hi!!
Usually when the pilot is lit, it is warming a thermocouple (skinny copper tubing) which sends a signal to the gas valve to keep the gas flowing, if the pilot goes out accidentally the thermocouple won't send any signal and the gas stops flowing. If the thermocouple becomes inoperative, even if the burner is lit, the signal gets interrupted and so is the flow of gas to the burner.
Shut the gas supply valve to the unit, remove the thermocouple from the gas valve and remove the fastening screw from the gas chamber and get a replacement. Most hardware stores carry them. They run about $5 -$10.
Good Luck!! A HELPFUL - 4 THUMBS - rating for this solution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for using FixYa.

Because she ain't gettin confirmation of ignition.
Your flame sensor is contaminated most likely.
Get a dry brillo pad and clean that dude. Give it the alabama gloss and the mississippi shine then reinstall and retry.

If the pilot light goes out will the gas shut off automatically

yes it will, the pilot flame hits a flame sensing device called a thermocouple this device sends a signal to the gas valve and shuts the main valve when therre isnt a flame signal; however, its never a bad idea to manually shut off the gas when youve lost pilot flame.

The pilot won't stay lit on gas hot water tank.

Make sure thermocouple tip is seated inside the burner flame.
Make sure thermocouple is not overtightened. Finger-tight + 1/4 turn.
If the pilot lights, then ECO energy cut off is not tripped, but gas control valve might be bad.
Check color of pilot flame: it should be strong and clear blue.
If pilot flame is weak, or color of flame is yellow-orange: Clean pilot orifice and burner and combustion parts on yearly basis.
Clean air intake screen if applicable.
Increase air supply to water heater. Open a window and see what happens.
Check for adequate draft going up chimney using match under vent hood to see if smoke drafts immediately upwards.
Bleed air out of gas line.
Check gas pressure.

Pilot light goes out when gas turned on

I am assuming that you are saying that after you have pushed the pilot knob down and the pilot lites and stay lite and then you turn the knob to turn it to ON the pilot goes out...... Then the Gas Valve is bad and will have to be replaced....... Or if you are saying that the pilot goes out when the burners come on then you may need to replace the Thermocouple because the main burner flame is pulling the pilot flame off of the thermocouple and it is weak and will shut the gas off.... Or You could have a cracked heat exchanger that when the burners are on and then the blower comes ON and is blowing the flame around and blowing the pilot flame off of the thernocouple......which will shut the gas off....and then you will need a new furnace or New Heat Exchanger...... These are the most common problems Hope this helps.....

I have a gas heater that keeps shutting offf. The power is turned on but within hours it cuts off. mariaram@aol.com

the thermal coupling may be bad!! if the coupling goes bad it will shut down flame. its a safety feature, if gas comes out, and no flame it shuts gas off. the coupling is in pilot light flame and works on the same principle as a thermometer to sense the heat. good luck !!

Unit ( model SR142gp serial 0608MA0448 - propane fuel ) operates as designed, but can not cut flame to pilot with the thermostat. must cut the gas control to pilot to the get pilot flame & pilot...

The pilot light should remain "ON" all the time. It is not intended to ever go off, unless you are not going to use the fryer for several months at a time. Then you can just shut off the propane which will shut off the pilot light flame. It does not cost that much to run the pilot light all the time. About one to two dollars a week.

Pitco frialator (propane)

Better check the incoming gas pressure first, it should match the requirement as stated on the nameplate. Low gas pressure will make the pilot flame small until it could not heat up the thermopile which will shut both main burner and pilot flame.
