SOURCE: Will only charge to 40 psi, is supposed to charge to 150

You may have a problem still related to the original reason it was reconditioned.

However, you should have a regulator that you set to the tank pressure you want to maintain. Most have a tool regulator as well and 40 psi sounds like that is what it is set for.

If you do have a tank pressure regulator and it is still not charging above 40 psi, then either take it back or pick up a new regulator for under $20 at Home Depot and replace the gauge you have now.

Also, sometimes the gauge will have a needle tilted so that one end presses against the glass, and if you tap the glass hard with your finger it will move on around to the correct pressure.

Finally, if you are not experienced with small compressors, look under your gauge and see if there is not a black knob that pulls out and pushes in to turn and change the pressure.

That is what the relief valve is set at, you need to
either increase the pressure on the relief valve or
reduce the pressure on the pressure cutout switch. Stephen

Check for internal leaks in compressor - compression rings on the cylinder braking often.
Another problem would be fittings or piping leak - usually a simple O-ring replacement will do a job.

Regulator will not exceed 90 psi.

Nicholas:
It is possible to replace the regulator with a higher capacity regulator. Almost all air tools warn against using more than 90 PSI, and I think that your regulator is limited to 90 PSI for safety reasons... (but why on a compressor capable of 150 PSI I don't know). If you need more pressure, buy a replacement regulator (doesn't have to be Sears) and use a 1/4 inch nipple or a short length of air hose to connect it to your compressor.

I have a porter cable 6 gallon compressor. The motor used to cut out at 150 psi, but now it cuts out at 135. Is this a faulty tank pressure gauge misreading the pressure or a motor cutting out too early

it could be your air pressure adjustment knob, where your air line hooks up, which controls the psi to a lower or highist seting to adjust for different tools and uses.

Sounds like the pressure switch is shorted together. Unwire the switch and see if it shuts off.

check tank pressure as it may be the rings n not getting to set pressure or faulty pressure sensor

Compressor won't kick back on when its suppose too

The tank check valve is probably bad. Folow the large discharge line off the head, disconnecting one end of it. If you get air out of the line you have a bad check valve. If you don't get air you are probably looking at a valve job.

Compressor Support

Home Use: Compressed-air power tools can dramatically decrease the amount of time spent on a project. Many homeowners will use smaller, portable units (either hand-carried or wheeled) that move easily from the garage to the house, yard or roof. Common air toolsAir Tools such as brad nailersAir Nailers, reversible drillsAir Drills, and impact wrenchesAir Impact Wrenches require about 0–5 CFM (Cubic feet per minute — units in which air flow is measured). It's important to know if the compressor you purchase will drive the air tool you'll need for your project. For example, smaller air nailersAir Nailers run on 2 to 5 CFM at 70 to 90 PSI, while larger shearsShears, sandersSanders and polishersPolishers require up to 10 or more CFM and 100 to 120 PSI. Business Use: Air compressors used for business/professional applications are often classified “industrial grade.” They're packed with features that let you take on more demanding jobs with more horsepower, more CFM, more PSI and more (longer) run times. Though some industrial-grade compressors are portable, many are stationary units with large-capacity, ASME certified air tanks (up to 120 gallons), greater HP, more CFM air volume and faster recovery time to run a wide variety of air tools for as long as you need them to do the job.
