Question about Stihl Chainsaw 045 056 Clutch Chain Saw O45 O56 45

1 Answer

Can you tell me what my stihl chainsaw ignition point gap should be when the case says 045AV and the literature I find says that this has an electronic ignition (magneto) and the literature says breaker point setting; none. I set them at .024", but that was too wide as they didn't even close. So I set them with my ohm meter to be open about 1/3rd of the crank revolution. The saw starts and sort of idles but craps out and bucks when trying to throttle up, as if out of time. It is likely that there are carburetor issues as well, but I need to get the ignition house in order first. If you could find me a point gap setting, that would be awesome. Thanks! Chris

I thought the unit was under the flywheel, in this case there is no gap to set it just screws to the crankcase and you re fit the flywheel.

You need a cam tool--probably easier to see your Stihl dealer and have them set the points. Good luck!

Weak spark hard start stihl 021

Check the pole gap on the ignition module to the flywheel magnets. Use a thin business card for a gauge. If it has the correct gap and you have tried a new spark plug, then the module itself is likely failing. Hope this helps!
