Needle will not go up or down

Hi, I borrowed a bernina 1090 and was doing fine when my bobbin thread broke and I rethreaded it and when turning the wheel by hand to get the bobbin thread to come up suddenly the needle will not move up or down.  I am now very nervous as this is my mother-in-laws machine.  What can I do?

Make sure the bobbin winder is off.
Remove the thread and turn the handwheel to see if it is free. Check the bobbin and hook area to see that there is no thread locked around something. If there is , remove it and try it by hand again. If this doesn't solve your problem, talk to ***********-in-law and let her know about the problem. She may have had the same problem earlier and if not she can tell you where to take it for service. I don't think this is a serious problem that should entail a lot of expense.Don't try to hide the problem as this will upset her a lot more when it comes out as you know it will.

Bernina activa 130 tension loose after needle breaking into bobbin area

Is it the bobbin tension that is very loose? Try tightening it. Also check that the bobbin has been installed in the bobbin case, turning the correct direction and that the bobbin tension is threaded properly.

Bobbin Tension How and Why Tension is Adjusted

Understanding Bobbin Tension

Understanding Thread Tension Threads

If it is the upper tension that is loose and creating "thread nests" under the fabric, the machine is either misthreaded or possibly the thread is not seated completely in the tension disk.

Remove the upper thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the upper thread from the beginning--verify the thread path is correct.
Set the upper tension to the midway point between high & low number (the factory standard--although it may need tweaking later for your particular machine).

Retest your machine. Hopefully, the issue has been resolved. If not, it may need service.

The top thread does not pull up the bobbin thread

Is the bobbin thread through the needle eye? If not then it needs to be there. The top thread doesn't pull it.

A blunt needle can also cause this. Try pulling a button thread or any slightly thicker thread through all the tension springs, perhaps you have a blockage somewhere.

Assuming your bobbin tension is not too high, make sure the bobbin case is clean on the inside - use a cotton bud to clean it out. Are you using good quality Bernina bobbins - if not you're on a hiding to nothing ! It is possible that the bobbin case is deformed, but most likely your service man has set up the tensions too high ... look for someone else !

Bernina 1008 sewing machine making huge clumps of loops on underside of fabric. have tried moving screw on bobbin in two opposite directions without a sign of improvement.

Hi: You have threaded the machine incorrectly. Rethread the machine with the presser foot up to the needle, pull the thread (loose) and drop the presser foot while pulling thread, thread should get tighter, then thread needle and machine will work fine. Make sure the top tension is set at where you normally have it, probably about #4 or #5

The needle thread will not pick up the bobbin thread

It looks right but its not. Try looking on the internet for threading instructions. The bobbin winds in two directions, I have never saw a Bernina but I have 2 new machines and the thread goes in and then threads back to the left. Its hard to describe. But if the bobbin isn't right it will not pick up the thread. Write to Bernina for instructions. There are websites that have the directions for free.

Bernina Bernette 600 Deco embroidery machine

It could be that there is a loose piece of thread, or some fluff which is obstructing the tension gauge. Try blowing around the theading area (or even run the hoover pipe near it to see if you can **** it out). I cleared mine by folding a piece of non fluffy material and rubbing gently between the tension dial and machine.

Good luck
