On most printers the gold strip goes into the printer first. As you do not state the model, it is hard to say. If you look at the spot where the cartriges go, you should see some contacts that will lineup with the gold strip.

How to remove ink cartridge

Hi,
1. Open the printer, and then press down on the cartridge carrier levers. 2. Remove the used print cartridge or cartridges. 3. If you are installing new print cartridges, remove the tape from the back and bottom of the color cartridge, insert the cartridge in the right carrier, and then close the color cartridge carrier lid.
Warning-Potential Damage: Do not touch the gold contact area on the back or the metal nozzles on the bottom of the cartridge.

My printer prints but it is difficult to read the small prints

Please perform printer maintenance like alignment and color correction and Wipe the strip down with a dry, soft cloth to remove any dust or dirt. Locate the gold-colored strip on the printing cartridge. Wipe the rest of the cartridge with a rag and a little bit of rubbing alcohol to remove any remaining dirt on the cartridge. Do not wipe down the golden strip, because the rubbing alcohol could damage it. Allow the rubbing alcohol to dry.

I installed a new black cartridge and now it is not printing. I need the installation guide for allignment

Hello,

Please follow below instruction. Otherwise, visit this link. Link
We hope we have provided you a solution to your problem.

Thank you.

The Canon Pixma Mp160 is an all-in-one printer, scannermag-glass_10x10.gif and fax machine. Replacing the cartridge in the printer requires little effort. Make sure to use the correct replacement cartridges for your MP160; installing the wrong cartridge type could prevent your printer from working or cause it to fail. Use caution to prevent ink spilling or dripping on you.

Step 1 Identify the cartridge that requires replacement. Press the "Copy" button to display the ink level. "BLK" indicates your black ink cartridge; "COL" indicates your color cartridge. If the display is only one bar (or none), then the cartridge should be replaced.

Step 2 Open the top compartment (scan lid) on your Canon printer. Pull back the compartment support legs to hold it open.

Step 3 Put on gloves, and then push the cartridge down to unlock it. Pull it toward you to remove it from the printer.

Step 4 Remove the tape strip from the replacement ink cartridge. Insert the new ink cartridge (black on the left, color on the right) at an angle, with the gold circuit facing down and towards the front of the printer. Push the cartridge up to lock it in place.

Step 5 Repeat the process if you are replacing multiple cartridges. Close the scan lid when you are finished. If the "Low Ink" warning does not go away, then turn the printer off, wait a few minutes and turn it on again.

Printer would recognize black ink i have replace the in three times with brand new cartridges any idea what to do

Sounds like your new cartridges are not being recognized, correct?

If not done already please ensure each cartridge has any plastic packing strips (usually with a colored tab) off the outside of the cartridge. Vendors use these to cover the contacts and/or the print heads for shipping and can be tricky to see.

Otherwise please ensure no ink has spilled or leaked into the slot where your printer cartridge goes. Use good computer cleaning swabs or wipes to remove any ink spill or dirt there. Gold contacts should be clean. Good cleaning wipes or swabs will let you remove dirt and ink but not leave fuzz or strands of cloth in printer. At this time you can also ensure no paper or labels etc are left inside covering gold contacts.

Then test it again, the cleaning process should not care what the state of the ink is reading. If the problem is still there…Turn over the ink cartridges so that the gold strip is facing up and set them on a stable surface. Then, dip cotton swab in distilled water and clean off the top and sides of the ink cartridges, but be careful not to get the gold strip wet. Dry off cartridges with a paper towel and then with a cloth clean the back of the carriage and then replace the cartridges in the printer.

Warning: Do not leave the ink cartridges outside of the cartridge carriage for more than a half hour, as the ink will begin to dry.

"Print carrier stall"?

Error 0502-Carrier Stall indicates a physically blocked carrier. This condition can occur for many possible reasons. Most often, the carrier is blocked because the ink cartridge lids are open while the printer is on (Figure 1).

carrierstall.jpg
Figure 1: Open Ink Cartridge Lids

Reseat the Ink Cartridges and Make Sure the Lids Are in Place
  1. Make sure the printer is turned on.
  2. Lift the printer's front cover.

new_note.jpg Note: The ink cartridge should be in the up/loading position unless the printer is busy.
  1. Squeeze the tabs on the cartridge lids and lift the cartridge lids up. The cartridge pops up when the lid is fully lifted.
  2. Remove the cartridges.
  3. Make sure that all of the protective tape has been removed from the contacts on the ink cartridge.
  4. Replace the cartridges.
  5. Snap the lids closed.
  6. Close the printer's front cover.
  7. When prompted on the printer's LCD to choose New or Old, choose Old.
  8. Press Select.
new_note.jpg Note: For more information about reseating ink cartridges, refer to the Maintenance or Ink Cartridge Maintenance section in the Online User's Guide.

  3. Gently slide the ink cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer.
  4. Gently move the top part of the printer belt to the right.
  5. Using an index finger, gently push encoder strip (Figure 1) down and then back up, to get it back into the slot located on the back of the ink cartridge carrier.

  6. Gently press the strip first to the rear, and then forward, to ensure that it is seated correctly.
  7. Manually move the ink cartridge carrier to the left, then to the right, to check the positioning of the encoder strip.
  8. Once the encoder strip has been re-seated, close the scanner lid.
  9. Re-connect the power cord to the printer.

Status light flashing -- no communication with the printer

Please follow the instructions given below:

1. Disconnect the USB cable and the printer power cable.
2. Please disconnect the power supply from the back of the printer.
3. Then remove the cartridges from the printer.
4. Please reconnect the power supply back and turn on the printer.
5. If lights are blinking then printer encoder strip is most likely the problem. Unplug the power from the printer. Open the front cover and move the cartridge carrier to the center. You should see a white ribbon cable, a thin plastic strip and a black belt with teeth.
6. The thin plastic strip is the encoder strip. It rides in a sensor on the back of the cartridge carrier that you will not be able to see. Reach in with the first finger of either hand and carefully strum the strip as if playing a guitar.
7. The strip will need to be lowered slightly and brought towards you slightly. Please be careful not to break the strip or your printer will not function. Once you believe the strip is set correctly, plug the power back and let us know if the lights are still blinking.
8. If you cannot repair the strip, please let us know so that we can assist you further.
Please Note: Fixing the encoder strip is a delicate procedure. During the troubleshooting, if the strip breaks, you will not be able to use the printer.
9. However, if lights are not blinking then try inserting one cartridge at a time and check if you can see any lights blinking. If light blinks with one cartridge then that cartridge is defective.

HP 3310 says "Black Cartridge Empty" when new one is installed.

remove the black cartridge/ place a piece of scotch tape on the left side of the gold top gold contact on the back of the cartridge, put back in the printer, remove the cartridge again and put tape on the right top gold contact on the right side of the cartridge, put back in the printer, remove cartridge and take off the two pieces of tape, should work good for you now/ It no doubt will print out an alignment page now.
