SNAP! I've got the same problem. I've tried everything, brand new cartridges etc., settings are correct. Was working ok then just stopped for no apparent rreason. Had techy's out to look at it too but they can't work out what's wrong with it either. They just told me to buy a new printer. It's such a great little printer I'm reluctant to get rid and buy new. Have spoken to HP people on the customer helpdesk. They said to try these steps to reset the signal for "cartridge empty".
Turn off printer
Unplug the USB cable (the one between the printer and PC)
Turn printer back on
Hold down the on/off button while you press the ink alert button 8 times, then the resume button 4 times.
Release the on/off button
This is supposed to clear the problem, it didn't work for me but it might work for someone else.
Because it didn't work for me, HP then advised me to get the printer serviced by a qualified engineer as they could help me no further. I've decided against this as it'd probably be a lot cheaper to buy a new printer. Such a shame, this lovely little printer has served me very well since May 2002 for my home business.
Anyway, I hope this solution works for other people
There are moments when you just want to crawl into a techno hole! Having spent ages trawling through solutions and even replacing my trusty 960C, I eventually found that removing the green protective strip from the bottom of my new HP tri cartridge dramatically improves ability to print!

First off, if you touched the metal contacts on the printer or cartridge, you could damage or leave a film on the contact surface. Take it out of the printer, with a qtip dip in rubbing alcohol, squeeze out access, rub surfaces, air dry, and reinsert again. If still no ink, turn the print end up under the very hot water tap and run for 2 minutes. Dry and replace. It may do the trick.
I have an HP DeskJet 1220C that has been working fine for two years
now. All of a sudden it can only print in pink and black. It is driving
me crazy. I have tried the following without any success:
1. Replaced the cartridges twice 2. Aligned and cleaned the cartridge from the computer 3. Soaked the cartridge head in hot water, and made sure that all three colors will bleed out of the head 4. Cleaned the cartridge contacts with an eraser 5. Cleaned the cartridge contacts on the printer with a brush
Printer lights can can blink for more than one reason, so the solution can vary. These solutions need not be performed in a specific order, but solutions for the most common issues are presented first. Blinking lights are often accompanied by an error message on the computer screen, which might help determine the solution.
First make sure there is no blue tape over the print head (the coppery brown strip is the electronics - don't pull this part off). If this wasn't the problem then the electronics on your cartridge are not functioning properly. There is no way to fix the electronics and you should get your money back from Walgreens. I own a Cartridge World store and we always make sure the electronics are functioning before we sell a cartridge. The HP 78s are very sensitive and sometimes do not work even after all our efforts. Yet with our 100% satisfaction guarantee our customers get working replacements for free.
Hi, I have the driver files that you need but the size is 15Mb and also I am unable to send you the link so you can download it yourself as it requires a member login. So...can you email me and I will reply sending an attachment with the files in it.
You can try restoring the printer to factory settings..and try agian it has worked most of the times for me..Let the catridge be in the printer when you do this..
