Why doesnt the pull cord to start the motor retract?

There is a coil spring that pulls the cord back in. It may be broken or it may have slipped out of the retaining slot.
These are fairly straightforward to dismantle without danger of hurting yourself. Remove the starter assembly from the trimmer. If you look at the underside at the centre of the spool and there is a screw visible, that's where you will take it apart.
CAUTION!! If you decide to take it apart the spring will have a mind of its own and you will need to be patient to re-assemble it if you find and fix the problem.

Testing ignition coil on a weedwacker

Be awared If you have ordered an ignition coil for your machine do not forget to give the details of the serial number of your trimmer because of marketing technical changes or modified ignition s the flywheel magnet and coil can be have changed so that if you order without giving up the details it goes oft wrong and it will give by the unknown people no spark anymore if not is order the right part or the combi flywheel with ignition coil together ,other way a great change that you dont have not the right fitting flywheel for the new ignition coil.
Also use a new sparkplug .and some equivalents to try.

Hello, I have a craftsman gas hedge trimmer that will not start. What are some things I could checl out to try to get it working

Two items fairly easy to check; the condition of the spark plug and whether the ignition coil is healthy. The plug must be removed to check it for fouling (a buildup of deposits near the spark gap) and also wipe the insulator of the plug clean and inspect it carefully for fine lines; a cracked insulator (not uncommon) will provide a path for the spark voltage to ground before it reaches the spark gap. The ignition coil can be checked by sight in a shady area (sunlight makes it tough to see). Pull the plug wire free of the plug and insert anything metallic into the female connector that will extend the contact. Position your extension near some metal part of the engine and watch this gap as you tug on the starter rope. You should be able to see the spark appear a couple of times with each pull of the rope to its limit.
These coils are not very well made and cost $30-40 US to replace.
Once you have access to the coil. use some gauge (could be a knife or screw driver blade) so you can re-gap the coil if a new one is installed.
I suggest that you go to the Sears website below and enter your model number. You should find it listed there and it will have a parts breakdown of your trimmer along with part numbers, etc.:

Sears parts dept.

Using this you can orient yourself on the innards of the trimmer.

Hi, I cannot get any spark from my line trimmer.I have tried a new spark plug and that does not work. The line trimmer is a homelite.Thank you

Hi, there are two possibilities that cause this problem. One, you must check over the wiring from the kill switch to the ignition coil as well as the plug wire itself and its' attachment to the boot. The other is that you ignition coil is faulty and that it needs replacement. To reinstall the coil, use a thin piece of plastic or a business card to place between the the magneto and the coil. This will give you an appropriate gap between the two. Then, tighten the bolts and remove the spacer. Good luck.
