If you erased the Windows partition when you installed Ubuntu you will need to re-insert your Windows Vista disc and reinstall Windows over Ubuntu using that, This will only work if you have enough keys remaining on your Windows Vista License, however. Hope this helps.

What luck has anyone had with Windows 7 on this machine?

You could try leaving the system restore for a bit longer. It MIGHT get past 99%. However, you can often run into issues with creating the restore disk. If the disk is currupt, there isn't much you can do about it.

Since Ubuntu ran perfectly, there isnt any other problem with the computer. Running a clean install of Vista/7 or even 8 is obviously an option that will work. You will have to buy the product though.
Otherwise, you could stick to Linux. The software center is really good, and getting used to the environment doesn't take too long.

Need driver for webcam (Medion akoya P6612 Laptop / Ubuntu OS)

Try Manycam and see if it works with Unbuntu. Go to www.google.com and in the search box type: "download cnet" (without the quotes) and go to their site. Look down on the left and you will see a gray box that says find software. Type in: "Manycam" (without the quotes) and go download and install it. It's absolutely free, no trial period and it comes with application and I think driver. Give it a try. Be sure not to accept any buggy stuff that it will ask you during the install.

This is kind of a long solution, but you can download and make an ubuntu (a linux distro) live cd. Restart your computer with the cd in the cd drive, and run ubuntu as a trial with no changes to your computer. Use the built in partition editor provided with ubuntu. It is much better than anything you can get in windows and you can recover the files and then combine the partitions.

Right, i just installed ubuntu, then overwrite my vista drive, i have a vista disk but i don't know how to overwrite the linux bootloader with vista. last time i tried this if failed.

To re-install Windows Vista please do the following:
Put the disc in and restart the computer
Boot from the disc
Do a full system install
Delete your partition [contains Ubuntu(Linux)]
and install.

I recently did this last week, went from Ubuntu back to windows 7, and currently I duel-boot both Operating Systems. I hope this helps!

How to remove Ubuntu from a Vista dual-boot config

On my new PC I wanted (still want) to have toa go with Linux. I chose to experiment with Ubuntu. I downloaded thedesktop CD, burned it, freed up some disk space (inside Vista) andloaded up Ubuntu from the CD. After some experimenting I figured outhow to install Ubuntu in the empty disk space and it all worked fine(GRUB took over my booting (recognized Vista automatically!) and Ubuntuloaded up fine).

Then I tried to install my GPU drivers andeverything went wrong.. For some reason Ubuntu wouldn't boot anymore(failed to load X-Server or something). I was completely lost andwanted to remove Ubuntu.

This is where things start to get really messy!

Ifyou simply remove the Ubuntu partition, GRUB (Linux boot loader) willstill be on your PC (in control). It will trip out, as the Ubuntupartition will be removed.. Bad thing!

So you need to restore your Master Boot Record (MBR) for Vista (so that Vista will handle the booting, not GRUB).

Googleonly pointed me to sites that explained how to REMOVE VISTA, whichisn't what I wanted. Many sites talked about the 'fixmbr' command, butthis is really only available in Windows XP.

So how do you restore your MBR for Windows Vista?

1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7. Type Bootrec.exe /FixMbr, and then press ENTER.

That'sit. Now when you reboot your PC, Vista will load automatically... Youcan now safely boot using your Ubuntu desktop CD, to use the built inGnome Partition Manager to remove your Ubuntu partition!

Trial means you have not paid still? I see the following options:
1. Just reapply.
2. Contact MS support.
3. Follow the example of the French Police - Ubuntu ( www.ubuntu.com ) and Open Office if you do not play games much. Even for games, there are more and more emulators. I personally am already in the Linux camp after eight years with Windows and feel like a phoenix.

Ubuntu linux compatibility with vista

1.Repartition HD to fit Ubuntu
2. Install Ubuntu
3. Upon starting computer, select operating system (Vista or Ubuntu)
You could also use Wubi which is a program on the ubuntu 8.10 cd that allows you to install Ubuntu right from Vista and it will run just like it's an app per say. Just to warn you though, it will not run as fast and if you are installing this on a laptop it won't be able to hibernate. Also it doesn't require you to create a separate partition to install Ubuntu. This could potentially be a bad thing, depends on how you look at it.

Hope this helps!

About driver

I think it would make the most sense to reinstall Vista with a functional Vista disc (should be DVD). Alternatively you can check HP's Website for XP drivers which may not exist if it came with Vista. You could also reinstall Ubuntu. If you want a dual boot with Ubuntu you should install Windows first and Ubuntu will provide that option when setting it up and allow you to resize the Windows partition and create separate partitions for Ubuntu.

Hi!

I understand that you had Vista installed on your computer, then installed Ubuntu, decided you didn't like it, and now want to reinstall Vista, but your system recovery disc does not work, correct?

From you description, I presume you did a full install of Ubuntu, which will require a full reinstallation of Vista to restore it. If you still have your original Vista install disc, load it into your CD-ROM drive and follow the prompts to reinstall Windows. If you can't find your install disc, or if you were never provided one, contact Microsoft's customer support and ask them how to get a new one. You can also ask them about getting new system recovery discs, which could also help revive your system.
