What is the proper level on the dip stick for the oil?

There should be an area on the stick with cross marks on it. Try to fill it to the upper part of that cross hatch section

I have a honda gx160 5.5 generator will not start with the, i believe oil sensor plugged into the turn off switch oil level ok will i need to change the sensor also is this a big job.

i have never bothered to change onebecause you need to strip the motor, that is not realy such a big job if you have done a few ,but you just need to check the oil when you fill the gas tank , thatis simple enough . the oil alert is realy a gimmick for the dummies, it only takes 10 secs. to chech the oil manually

Faulty Generator

check for open armature (check continuity at slip rings). Also check that diodes are good (not opened). Engine RPMs should be at least 1800 or 3600 depending on alternator. Probably 3600 RPM (for 60hz).

Also check to see if you have a bad circuit breaker.

My honda gx160 generator keeps cutting out after 2 mins

Sounds like fuel flow is restricted.
Is the vent cap on the gas tank clear?
Pull the fuel hose off at the carb and let run into a container from the fuel flow good while filling a cup or two worth of fuel?
If not check filter at fuel switch or at hose connection at tank for restriction.
It takes about 2 minutes to use up fuel in the carb with engine running.
Sure sounds like a fuel problem.
