Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

My Dell Inspiron 1545 Laptop started freezing up so I turned it off and let it sit for a while. When I turned it back on nothing showed up except a gray screen. I turned it back off again then turned it on and the same screen showed up. I pressed a button on it and a loud high pitched noise came out of the laptop. What's going on?!

Sounds to me like your hard drive died, take it into a repair shop and they should be able to fix it up.

1545 inspiron tricks

Okay, there's roll-over, play dead, and fetch.
[ Ziiiing! Okay fetch it dog! Ewww! That crunched it! ]

What 'tricks' would you like? Post back in a Comment.

A) The top of a Processor's case, and the bottom of the Heatsink that sits on it, are not perfectly smooth.

A magnified view would detail, 'Hills, Valleys, and Pitholes'.

When the two parts are mated together, these imperfections listed above, create air pockets.

Air is an Insulator, not a Conductor.

Thermal paste fills these voids, and is an excellent conductor of heat.
After time the thermal paste dries up. It looses it's thermal conductivity.

The top of the Processor, and bottom of the Heatsink, should be cleaned THOROUGHLY. Then new, fresh thermal paste applied.

ALL power removed from the laptop, (AC adapter {Charger} and Battery), you need to wear an ESD wrist strap, and have it's alligator clip attached to a good ground source.

[ Electro Static Discharge.
Example, ]

This is what the Fan Assembly/Cooling Tube looks like,

Motherboard removed this is the side you will see.

At the top you see the Fan Assembly. (Fan inside a silvery shroud)
To the left of the Fan Assembly is the finned Heatsink.

Coming down from the Heatsink is the copper Cooling Tube.
Here you will see two metal plates attached to the Cooling Tube.

The first plate closest to the Fan Assembly sits on top of the Processor.
The next metal plate that is at the end of the Cooling Tube, sits on top of the G.P.U.

[Graphics Processing Unit. Slang? Graphics chipset ]

There are two views available. In the two views shown click on the bottom one.
This shows the Fan Assembly/Cooling Tube, upside down.

See the metal plate that sits on top of the Processor? Has four 'ears'?
The squarish copper plate in the middle, actually sits on top of the Processor.

The metal plate with the pointed tip to the right, sits on top of the GPU. The rectangular plate in the middle, actually sits on top of the GPU.

The top of the Processor, top of the GPU, and the two areas indicated above, need to be cleaned THOROUGHLY.
Use Q-tips dipped in Isopropyl Alcohol. (Rubbing alcohol)

I use 91 percent alcohol. 70 percent will do. Do Not recommend 50 percent. (It's 50 percent alcohol, and 50 percent WATER )

May take a few (Bunch?) of Q-tips. Sometimes it's a gooey mess.
DO NOT leave any old Thermal Paste residue behind. Clean enough to eat off of, is the motto.

Isopropyl Alcohol is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE!
Use in a WELL ventilated area with NO sparks or flames present.

Laptop is overheating? Clean the inside of the laptop, (Especially between the fins of the Heatsink, fan blades, center hub of fan, and surrounding cage ), and clean, and apply new, fresh Thermal Paste.

B) No display on laptop's internal monitor? Use a VGA monitor, and connect it to the VGA connector on the laptop. (Laptop OFF, monitor OFF)
See if the display shows on the external VGA monitor.

(You may have to hold the Fn key down, and tap once on the F8 key.
Still no? Hold the Fn key down again, and tap again on the F8 key )

Display doesn't show you have a bad graphics chipset. (GPU)

Display does show on VGA external monitor, you have a problem with the Video Cable, and/or in the Display Assembly.

C) Laptops should be kept clean inside. Air is used to cool the hardware components.
Also do NOT block off the air intake duct on the bottom. Keep the laptop on a hard flat surface.
You may wish to also use a cooling pad. The fans create additional air for cooling.

90 PERCENT OF THE TIME the problem is the screen Inverter, and not the LCD screen.

[ Primer:
An LCD screen cannot produce light. It needs an additional light source,

A Backlight is the additional light source.
A Backlight can be a CCFL, or a series of LED's.
(Light Emitting Diode)

The Dell Inspiron 1545 Notebook PC uses has options of using either CCFL, or LED,

[ A CCFL is a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp.
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses, but on a MUCH smaller scale.

Average size is 2mm Thick. Length is almost as long, as the LCD screen is in height. 2mm is a little larger than 1/16th of an Inch ]

A screen Inverter is used to convert the power from the laptop, for the Backlight, and LCD screen.

ALL laptops that use a CCFL (Or two), for a Backlight, use a screen Inverter.
SOME laptops that use LED's for Backlighting, use a screen Inverter.

Primer over.

That's off the top of my pointed head. Is there something specific you are looking for?

My dell inspiron 1545 won't stay on. Initially it would just turn off while in use ... not shut down, just turn off. I've read other's problems with the same model laptop and the solutions aren't helping....

Sounds like an overheating problem. There are safeguards in place that is the processor temperature reaches a critical temperature, it switches off to protect it. Run it with a vacuum cleaner hose on the exhaust vent. If it stays on longer, it is an overheating problem. Your cooling fan may have seized.

My Inspiron 1545 turns off when I unplug it from adapter, and when plugged in, the power light on front flashes four times orange and one time white repeatedly.

Does the battery for dell inspiron 1545 plug in. It maybe because the battery pack is too hot ,you can turn off the laptop, let the pc notebook and the laptop battery both cooled down. Then try turn on it to see. If still happen to the matter,it must because the wrong turn off did harm to your Inspiron 1545 laptop adapter.

My Dell Inspiron 1545 keeps freezing. It doesn't respond and I need to power it off. This happens once every hour of use.

It is very possible you have malware infecting the systemm. Get the download below, install and update. Then when the program starts, perform a quick scan, let it run and when the scan is finished, hit the show results button and then delete all that it finds. Then rebot the machine.

Dell inspiron 1545 laptop not working

Sounds like the hard disk could have went bad. try running a diagnostic from your discs and if you receive an error, report it here or to Dell. If you did crash the hd, you will need a new one. I hope your machine is under warranty.
