Question about HP (C7972A-10PK) LTO Ultrium Storage Media

1 Answer

Issues with a C7972A 400GB tape: I observed that when the backup size reaches over 250GB, the tape starts giving an error that it cannot complete the backup. Is there a limitation on how much data can be placed on these tapes?

This tape is 200GB with no compression, up to 400GB with compression assuming 2:1 compression ratio. The compression ration is dependent on the type of file e.g. an MP3 file will not compress much, nor will a ZIP or JPG file, but BMP, DOC, TIFF will compress well. In my experience it is best to assume worst case and calculate for no compression i.e. assume max capacity of 200GB.

these tape cartridges are very slow to read & write. if u r reading a set of data & need to go back for certain data u have to rewind & wait & watch until that data area arrives. it takes a lot of time. in order to save time u need optical disk drives & dvds to backup your data. u can also ask them to convert your tape cartridge data into optical disks.

I have a problem with my toshiba external hard drive. the problem is that when i want to delete something from hard drive or want to move to my pc it give the error 0x80070570. can you please tell me any...

More often than not this is caused by a bad sector on the hard disk, and can be fixed following these steps:

First backup the data on that hard disk to another one.
Second, click Start then click Computer.
Third, right click on the external hard drive and select Properties.
Fourth, click on the Tools tab at the top of the window that pops up and run the Error Checking software (button usually says "check now" or something similar) and follow the instructions.

This will hopefully fix any issues you have with that drive and once completed should allow you to delete and move stuff again.

Thanks, if this solution helps please rate :)

Constantly getting write data to media errors

If you're using the MS Backup utility, it's creating .BKF files which are very large (1-2GB+). Your external hard drive uses a FAT32 file system, which has a limitation of 4GB per file. If your backup files are over 4GB, it won't copy. It probably worked on your 250GB hard drive because it was formated with NTFS and not FAT32. You'll need to limit the size of your backup files to 4GB or less, or use a different utility that has file-size splitting options.

No Compatible media found in HP Tape Drive

Try a brand new tape fresh out the wrapper.

If that doesnt work make sure you are using the right drive in your backup software!

It sounds like a message often seen in windows backup where you have selected the wrong tape drive from the list and it just tells you "No compatible media found" when actually the drive listed isnt even connected to your system still

Hi,

if you "have not" using Backup Software (e.g. Symantec Backup Exec, CA), you can try this IBM LTO-4 driver for Win2K.

The error is because the driver isn't loaded for the device. Look up how to add the device in symantec help. If windows recognizes it already then usually you can go to devices and add teh device from within symantec.

Error copying file or folder

One of the most important yet overlooked elements of PC maintenance is data backup. If you do not perform regular backups, chances are your productivity will eventually suffer from data losses or a failed Windows installation.

All versions of Windows after 3.1 ship with a free backup utility called Microsoft Backup. It is not the best backup program available, but it may be sufficient for your needs. (Backup is better in later versions of Windows. Microsoft recommends Win98/Me users purchase a third-party utility.) If you want more control over your backups, consider purchasing a third-party program.

Backup is part of the System Tools utility. However, Setup does not install it by default in Win98/Me/XP Home. If you cannot locate Backup, visit the Microsoft support site and query for article No. 152561 (Win98), No. 264541 (WinMe), or No. 302894 (WinXP Home).

In Win98/Me, click Start, select Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and click Backup. To create and run a backup, click the Create A New Backup Job radio button and click OK. Follow the prompts to create a full or partial backup. If you want to create a backup set and run it later or run an existing backup set, open Backup and click the Open An Existing Backup Job radio button and click OK. You can now access the main Backup dialog box.

In Win2000/XP, navigate to the System Tools utility and select Backup. Click the Backup Wizard button. If you do not see a Backup Wizard button, click the Welcome tab. In WinXP, the wizard will start automatically if you are in wizard mode. Follow the prompts to create your backup set.

When you reach the last dialog box, Completing The Backup Wizard, you can click the Advanced button to create a backup schedule (this option is not available in Win98/Me). When you reach the When To Back Up dialog box, select the Later radio button and click the Set Schedule button. Perform data backups on a schedule that is appropriate to the importance of your files (once a week is a common timeframe). You should also perform a system backup at least once a month.

If you do not want to use the wizard, or you are working with an existing backup, open Backup and click the Backup tab to access the main Backup dialog box.
