It varies depending on your specific model, but on most you use the FUNC lock to activate the num pad that is in the alpha part of the keyboard. It is usually a toggle, so hitting the key or combination will disable it as well.

Problems sending or receiving SMS may be caused by no or incorrect SMS settings. To set up your phone to use SMS, you need a message centre number, which is provided by your network operator. This is often set up automatically when inserting a new SIM card to a phone. Whiteout the message centre number, you are not able to send or receive SMS.
