Question about ASUS A8R-MX/SI Motherboard

3 Answers

Hi, I switched from a broken MSI K8T Neo2 Mainboad to an Asus A8R-MX/SI. Got 2 HDs SATA II type (2 TB & 0,5 TB), running WinXP SP3. Asus board has got 4 SATA ports; connected discs, and BIOS does see the drives. However, system does not boot; WinXP installation disc does not find any SATA drives. Asus has got BIOS version 0502. Manual talks about "IDE configuration", switching between standard IDE and RAID for the SATA drives. However, BIOS does not schow this option. Any idea, what may causing this issue, and how to fix? Thx for any hint! Regards Dieter Stegemann / Germany, Oldenburg

On windows install, you have to install the ULi Sata Driver for it to know the controller on board. Once you preload the driver it will see the drive and you can install windows. I believe the Asus A8R-MX/Si is Uli Sata Raid controller M1573, however your next problem will be the drivers for the motherboard, ATI Northbridge chipset I believe ATI Express 200M?, with a Nvidia Southbridge chipset. I had worked at this mobo for a while wiped the drive including the recovery partition. which I wanted to, as it was Xp and put win7 on, ran into the problem of it not seeing the hard drive, yet in the bios no problem. It was that windows doesn't see the controller you need the ULi Sata driver, then win7 installs no problem. I figured Win7 would see the other device controllers and install generic drivers to work. In most cases it did, however not the on board Lan Ethernet, so I have been looking for everywhere for the drivers, going through the list in windows for generic, tried about a dozen resulting in blue screens, restart , and remove the drivers. It is not the Marvell Yukon drivers, as a lot of sites report. The drivers for the Asus A8R-MVP do not work, as it is a different chipset. The final result may be to just throw another Lan card in , and at least get 10/100/1000 , where as the on board Lan Ethernet is only 10/100. I will keep trying until I find the driver win 7 likes for the on board lan, and will report back so that all the other people on the net will have a chance. Sadly no one has the answer as far as I have found. I have looked everywhere for the A8R-MX mother board Ethernet controller. Cannot find. All other drivers are here

Here is a site that shows you how to set bios up:,1126.html

Try to start with 1 disk on the mainboard you can always add one later.
The harddrive has to be in sata 0 or 1 on the mainboard.
The cd or dvd drive in sata 2
The asus bios is different than other bios.
Select main and select primary ide master and press enter
these settings is all auto
Next select boot and boot device priority and press enter

1st Harddisk
2st CD/DVD drive

How would you know what type K8T Neo of motherboard you have mine just says K8T Neo

The manual is mostly the same.
MSI K8T Neo is also, MS-6702 (v1.X) ATX Main board. You'll find K8T Neo printed just in-between the first and second PCI slot.
In-between the second and third PCI slots you should see, MS-6702 ver 1.0 (Printed in white). All 5 models use the same chipsets. VIA K8T800 PRO Northbridge and VT8237R/Plus Southbridge. K8T Neo-FSR/ FIS2R Socket 939 use the same manual.
K8T Neo-V V2.0 uses a socket 754 CPU.
K8T Neo2-F V2.0 Also uses socket 754 CPU.
K8T Neo2-F-FIR Uses a socket 939 CPU
So open the link provided for drivers, bios ECT;
The most noticeable item is the SATA ports. From 2 ports and up to 4 ports. In different locations on the MB.

MSI K8T Neo 2 not recognize Hitach 1 TB Sata

This is a quote from VIA:

"CHIP FIRM VIA issued a note to its customers telling them of problems with chipset support for hard drives using the Serial ATA II standard.
It said that VT8237 and VT8237R chipsets don't provide forward compatibility for S-ATA II, which is important as hard drive makers are beginning to manufacture this type of drive.

But Via is readying the release of VT8237R Plus, which will solve the problem. This means that motherboard makers that use the former chipset should clear their inventory before September.

Hard drive manufacturers position with S-ATA II is as follows, said Via in its note. Western Digital and Samsung are already shipping these devices, while Seagate and Maxtor will start shipping them during this quarter.

If you connect S-ATA II drives to an old Via chipset which includes the VT8237, VT8237R, VT6420 and VT6421L, the devices won't be detected.

Some mobo makers, such as Epox, have already responded to the problem and have warned their customers to seek the support of hard drive vendors. In a letter to its customers, it said that they should also check the specs of other manufacturers' Via based motherboards."
