Question about Tomtom GO 300 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

I have just updated tomtom go 300 but it now wont start up - the logo screen comes on followed by the green screen but it wont start properly and it then wont switch off either. The only way to get it to switch off is to use reset.

I have just updated my TomTom and I had to put in a bigger SD card. According to the software I have all the maps I want on my device but my device won't power up. It goes to the red hands and the drums, then it switches itself off. I have powered it up overnight but still no joy.

Tomtom not turning on

It sounds like the dreaded green light of death. The TomTom car chargers for this model and older had a inherit problem with sending more than the requaired amount of power to the TomTom 3rd edition and older models. When the extra power is supplied a diode in the TomTom burns out, but the green power light will come on.

If the unit is still under warranty, send it back to Tomtom. Even if the unit is no longer under warranty, complain to Tomtom. There is a problem with the CLA (cigarette lighter adapter). It can cause internal damages to your Tomtom. What happens is that there are three wires in the CLA along with a voltage stepdown circuit board. The wire are +, -, and a signal wire. If the signal wire get disconnect the voltage could spike up to 12vdc. The unit is designed for only 5vdc.

If the unit is out of warranty then try the following website for repairs. They can fix the two chips which usually blows.

"My tom tom wonts switch on. I have reset it and still it comes on with a boom boom noise and shows the 2 hands on the screen. It also shows the loading bar at the bottom, but then it just freezes and nothing happens. can anyone help please ASAP"

Sound as though your Map data card is corrupt. Remove the SD card and check it with your computer using a card reader. Backup the SD card onto your computer. You can run either chkdsk or go to the drive letter under 'My Computer' right click and select properties, then tools, then check now. You can also try starting the Tomtom with the SD card out of the unit. It should show a picture of the Tomtom with a 'X'. You can also try copying the data on the SD card to another SD card.
